Hey everyone, first id like to thank everyone of you guys who have been at this a while and are so quick to offer assistance. I started casting ingots from cowws, with a hot plate and an aluminum pot. Since then i have built this monstrosity..

I got the plans from this site..this baby melts a LOT of lead FAST! upon my initial test melt i noticed the molten lead began to discolor. A purple and a gold color appeared on top. I fluxed the batch with parafin wax thinking i would simply skim the colored part off..but it kept coming back..

I decided to pur some ingots and they came out really nice..i just need to streamline the process..the last of the ingots i poured looked funny but i expect my mold wasnt preheated enough. Any thoughts on the discoloration? can i still use the lead? here is a picture of the results. thanks again..Later Luke

The purple is pure lead. The gold is tin. Flux it back in. It's all good.

You completely botched the whole batch.

Send them to me. I have a way to fix it. I'll pay you .10 lb. :-)

He may need to send you the pot too. Just in case, right?

Nice comments from the peanut gallery. :kidding:

Seriously, I never have worried about what the ingots look like, as long as I can use them. Flux with sawdust and maybe lower your temp a bit.

Use enough heat but not excessive.

I feel I am hotter than needed by the time I start seeing "the rainbow" in a lead pot.

At moderate temps your fluxing won't be so obnoxious either.

Other than that ........ "ingot away"!!

Them colors indicate you may be a little too warm.
