Just ordered three molds from Midway. Two are Lee six-cavity molds, a 358-158 RF and a 358-148 WC. No problems with loading data or guns to shoot these bullets in, so don't need any real help there. I also bought an RCBS mold, a two cavity 45-325-FN-U. I don't have any experience loading for .45-70, I have a Marlin 1895. I am looking for a lighter bullet and load with less recoil, I have just had some neck surgery and want to limit the kick. Not planning on using this for anything beside fun shooting, paper punching and can rolling so how many deer I can shoot through is irrelevant.

Anybody use this bullet in .45-70, especially in a lever gun? Please share your comments pro and con. I have a good variety of powders to choose from, what works for you?

I never used that bullet while I had a shootable .45-70, but given your parameters; I would start at the low end of Trapdoor level loads. If you can't find any for that particular bullet, I don't see why you couldn't start with loads for the Gould bullet 457122. It is nominally 330 grains.

The .45-70 isn't any harder to load than a .357 with steel dies, it is just bigger.

I've had that mold for many years. It casts a little small for Marlins usually, so I cast it not over 8 BHN and just lube it. I also make it a point to have only one load for a boolit per cartridge so none of them gets mixed up as to load suitability. My load is very close to 11.2 gr. of RedDot with a large rifle primer and the boolit crimped lightly in the groove. It's pretty accurate and easy on the shoulder.

i'd bet 9-10 grs of unique would be like shooting a heavy boolit weighted 45 colt load.
