Hi Guys,

I need to find a backup powder for my AA#5 loads with powder availability being kinda spoty I wanted to have a backup for my "less than magnum loads" Something in the middle ground between fast 231/AA#2 and slower than #7/#9. I shoot cast in my .357mag 158g@1100fps, 10mm 180g@1050 and 44mag 250g@1050fps well under max pressure.(all revolvers all 6-8 in barrels)

On the burn charts sr4756 sits very close to AA#5 so I think its looking good. I ruled out sr7625 because its closer to 231 burn rates. And IMR 4227 and sr4759 burn rates are closer to AA#9 which I have.

I want to stick with an IMR powder.

Does anyone have experience with SR4756, it has fine grains so I know it will meter well. thoughts??

IMR 4227 seems awful slow being below H110. Is there a reason you want to stick with IMR on this such as availability?

I have not used any of the IMR powders for this application that you have listed.

Should work very well for your less than Magnum Loads. I use it for 12 guage 1 1/4 loads for small game hunting and for mild loads in 357 magnum.
Also works with 38 special. It does meter well. I use the load data provided by Hodgdon http://data.hodgdon.com/main_menu.asp

I would like to caution anyone contemplating using 4756 in a revolver. Do NOT, I repeat, DO NOT, rely on data from the Speer #8 Manual. I had some .357 Magnum loads (two grains under listed maximum) pressure tested, back in the day, and they were 67,000 lbs. psi. I had been running these, without issue, I may add, but I believed they were running a bit too heavy. These were going through my Model 19 S&W. A friend tried these in his Model #28 and had to pound the cases out. That is when I had them pressure tested. Shortly after, Speer discontinued all mention of that powder.

It turned out that Dupont had released more than one lot to the public and they varied LOTS in pressure. That has apparently been corrected (many years ago) so current information about 4756 should be fine. Just don't be lured by that old data. It IS too good to be true...

Let's stay safe, folks...

I just check 3 manuals. The ones that did have SR4756 loads were showing low velocity compared to what you want.

For what you want, I would use Unique or IMR4227. Blue Dot would also work.

Unique is close to the burn rate of #5 It's not IMR but great powder.
