I cast some Lee .452 300 grain RN, (large flat nose) boolits to try in high pressure sabots in my savage 10ML. I didn't bother with the gas checks as they are getting a ride in a sabot. At 100 yards I'm getting 3-3.5" groups about the same as the hornady 300 grain JHP's I was shooting. This is irons sights. I think they would likely tighten up a bit with a scope. I weighed a few at around 302-303 grains. I shot one into a chunk of firewood and recovered it. It was a picture perfect mushroom that weighed 272 grains. This was at about 2200 fps with 45 grains 5744. I'm going to try it out at 200 yds the next time I shoot. I'm guessing it will drop quite a bit as the boolit has the shape of a beer can. Looks like it should hit a deer very hard with the huge meplate.

Thoughts;
1.) I bet you're saving a few bucks.
2.) At 2200 fps that's gonna strike a mighty blow.

About like 1-3 WW & Pure lead

I got a complete pass through at 150 yds
Entered front center , exited through rear quarter

The gas check may improve accuracy. The sabot needs all the support it can get, and the void that results from leaving the gas check off could allow the sabot to slump a bit in the most critical area of the bullet. You might want to try a few with gas checks.

Veral Smith at LBT had me send him some of my sabots when he cut the mold for my rifle. He made the bullet to fit the sabot as closely as possible for this very reason.

Not trying to save bucks; want to kill them:)

Will try that. So far I've only found .458 gas checks. will have to look on line for .452

The diameter of 45 gas check shanks is the same on pistol and rifle bullets. The gas checks are the same. Hornady makes one check for both. Gator makes thick and thin, for rifle and pistol, but they are interchangeable. You will need to run your bullets through a sizer when you use gas checks, as the check must match the bullet diameter to work well in your muzzleloading rifle.
