.............Today I ordered a Uberti deluxe 1885 Hi-Wall with pistol grip and double set triggers in 38-55 from Cimarron. My dealer called and got the serial number so they transmitted the info to the state, and Cimarron said it'd ship today. I should be able to fondle it Tues-Wed of next week. Pickup date is Nov 6th.

I wish I could load some cast for it but I doubt that Cimarron offers a barrel slugging service. I guess I'll just have to go pick up 100 jacketed slugs so I can at least shoot it when I get it home. I don't even know if these things have a real 38-55 chamber or the short 2.08" one for modern brass. I did pick up 100 of the real cases from Starline. I thought it was funny as they're headstamped 38-55, 2.125" :-)

BTW, on Cimarron's website they show that the 1885 Hi-Wall now available in 405 Winchester.

Hope your new rifle does not have severe 38-55 itis. Need specs on groove, chamber and range report.

Congratts on the new addition :drinks:

But that is not a wait at all !
I have been waiting 9 months for my Shiloh Sharps and near as I can figure I still have another 9 months to go :???:

My suggestion for bullet diameter would be to run them through a .379" die . That has worked well for me in my Marlin 336CB and anyway it doesn't seem to remove much if any lead from the bullets I cast !

As far as cases are concerned I use the Winchester Western cases that are I think what you refer to as the "short ones" . They seem to work fine in the 336CB as well as my Marlin 1893 of 1894 vintage . Might be better to get the Starline for the old 1893 , but I prefer to use the same size for bothe these rifles ! Cutts down somewhat on "possible" mistakes . Also lessens my inventory [smilie=1:

...............I've got an old 1893 in 38-55 too:

It likes a .380"-.381" slug. I just don't wanna load up a bunch of usless ammo :-) Stuff that either won't chamber or is too small.

Buckshot,

Please keep us posted on this rifle. I've been considering one of these myself. I'm also tempted to buy one in .348 Winchester.

First thing I want to know is if it cocks the hammer when the lever is cycled like the originals do.

My friend bought one of those, slugs a little on the heavy side of .381, we are using your GB .384 with the gas check bored out and sized .3815 to just slip onto a fired case, and crimped. Darr lube and wc820. finally got it to group at 200yds. best at 100yds was about 4" with a wobbly tang sight. after the Parts Unlimited sight the groups are in the 1.5-2" range. The trigger only works as a set trigger, to uncock push the rear trigger forward.
The twist is slow IIRC 1-18

To drop the block, it is easier to remove the forearm and the lever spring, never had a coil spring Hiwall before, and it's different than a leaf spring one.

Th lyman 375167 works well also as cast.

Buckshot,

Mine slugs .379 groove, and it will chamber a .381 boolit .382 is a no-go I can bring you boolits to try 250-300 gr sized or unsized. Also chamber is 2.135. I hope to be out to shoot on Tuesday.

Half cock, not full-cock like the originals

I bought one of these (straight grip, single trigger) in 38-55 recently. .382 groove. Chamber takes the long starline brass. Bullet sized to .382 will chamber in the starline brass.

Haven't shot mine yet. Been busy working with some other rifles prior to deer season.

I've been looking at those also as I love highwalls. What's the twist rate?

Anyone know what the case wall thickness is at the case mouth on the 2.125" Starline brass?

40-60 May, interesting that your friend has the set-trigger setup on his Uberti.
Cimmaron couldn't give me any information at all on what the weight range of
adjustment is, or whether the trigger can be adjusted below 1 lb. Do you have any idea of what your friend's is set at, weight-wise, or how low it will go?
Thanks much,
John

I answered in a PM.
but I'll post it here also
The Adjustment on his rifle can be made so the trigger won't set. his is set at about 2# till he learns trigger control with set triggers.

We bought the Uberti from Buffalo Arms. they seemed more knowledgeable than Cimmarron.

Yhey also carry a full line of low walls and high walls.

............I see I paid about $80 more for my Hi-Wall locally then what Buffalo Arms charges. Darn. Oh well, I'm supporting a local guy I guess.

The cost of getting it from there to here is a real factor now. If you could just be going by to somewhere you actually needed to go and pick it up, it would be cheaper.
