View Full Version : Selected for promotion!!!

Love Life

After slugging it out for 5 years at my current rank waiting to get in zone, I finally hit the promotion zone this year.

After being judged by a mystical panel of Senior Marines I was found qualified for promotion to E-6.

Despite the draw down, despite the long wait, despite it all, I did it. I beat my peers and got promoted.

I'm floating on a cloud right now!

What is your number? I remember when I made Staff meritoriously, my buddy had a number that put him 11 months junior to me although we came in together. My promotion date was on the 2nd of the month as they promoted the line numbers on the 1st so they'd be "senior"

And congratulations, now you need to get to the Resident Staff NCO Academy once you finish those Non-Res Courses.

LL, you are an articulate person and can express your thoughts with aplomb. You should go far in your chosen profession. There should be no need for you to FEEL you are competing with your comrades at ANY time. ... felix

Thank you all!

To answer Bruce Drake- My number is in the 500's with 400 being promoted in October. So, I will be a November SSgt. Kind of funny since my date of Rank for both Cpl and Sgt were November 1, 20XX.

Kind of a bummer as well. The Marine Corps Birthday and Birthday Ball are that month!! I have to get white trousers, a new belt buckle, tie clasp, chevrons sewn on, etc. Oh, and I'll need to get a clip board now because all productive SNCO's carry clip boards.

Back when I was in the Navy, there was a high enough turnover in my field that you would see guys making E-7 before they had 8 years in. They were not especially liked by the guys in other fields who had 20 years in and were still either an E-5 or E-6. For some of those other fields, you basically had to wait for someone to die or retire before you could get promoted. They just didn't have the turnover from military to civilian life that my field did at that time.

Congratulations

A life time ago in the Army I only made it to E7 in seven years and was considered for E8 when I walked away. Just to much understanding of what was going on and I was just plain tired of all the mikey mouse stuff that was coming down the road. So I walked, always wondered if I made a mistake in leaving. The military tracked me for over 30 plus years after I walked away and have just now stopped looking for me, at least I think they have stopped. ha ha

Dale I wasn't aware the Continental Army had typewriters!

Congrats on making the cut! Those meritorious promotions at that level are impressive.

I only got meritorious from E1 to E2 in SOI. About a month before I would have got promoted anyway.

Thank you all for the kind words. I will be a SSgt now. "Gunny" is next...6 more long years from now.

Now I have to figure out my life all over again. I've been here for 3 years which means Uncle Sam is going to want me to move. Boo. I love Nevada. That means I need to hurry up and get my house bought.

I sent my dream sheet in requesting:
1. San Diego
2. Japan
3. Camp Lejeune (Boo)

Time to see where the road takes me from here.

Echo
09-14-2013, 11:38 AM
That road stretches a loooong way, and you can't know (right now) where it will lead. But as Chief Dan George said in "..Josie Wales", Endeavor To Persevere, and it will lead to satisfaction and success.

I would hope your next duty station is a good fit for you and your family.
What is your MOS mine on paper was combat engineer instructor in the Army. Really liked working with all the different branches back then, never found the Marines that hard to deal with when compared to some National Guard Units. Nothing against the Guard just some units were interesting shall we say.

Thanks for serving and just curious for those of us that are still waiting on brass will we see it before your move or are you taking it with you to finish up the group buy at the new duty station?

Congrats Jarhead!!!! It is a big step joining the SNCO ranks, more responsibility and more headaches, but cherish every second! Like you, I spent 6yrs in grade before I was selected and then 5 more before Gunny and man how I wish I could go back to those days. Think about the drill field for your next move, you'll work your **** off but you'll never regret it.

Don't you know by now that your first or second requested duty station NEVER comes through? You'll make Gunny before either of those. I was a E-5 Hospital Corpsman in the Navy back in 1965-69, and the only place I got "selected" to go to was Lemoore NAS, somewhere south of Fresno. BTW, Congrats! we're lucky we have good men such as yourself steadying the course.

I believe they can simply hoist their mug instead of saluting but better check with BRUCE first.[smilie=s:
