I plan on using my Mosin Nagant Model 38 for whitetail this year–any thoughts on the efficacy of a 185 gr. RN CB vs. a standard 150 gr. JX SP?

I think if you could flatten the nose a bit and cast the right alloy, you could make that 185 grain do just fine. Depending on velocity and alloy, it may work fine as is.

I don't know why not. Gun propels the chunk of lead in a reasonably accurate manner to the kill zone of the deer, meat in freezer. People were bringing meat home for a long time with rifles shooting that kind of boolit with far less than match accuracy before anyone thunk up these "magnums" and "high performance" boolits. Magnums? I don't need no stinkin' magnums. GW

My first few deer were killed with a Mosin Nagant, all handloads but not CB's. If you do your part, the cartridge and rifle will do theirs.

Ballistically, it's basically a .30-06. I've had good luck in my Mosins with the 311284, I'd imagine just about any .30 caliber cast would work provided your bore isn't too oversized and the bullet fits.

You shouldn't have a problem. Shot placement being the key.

Just bust the front shoulders- atleast one anyway and you'll have "Back straps"!:bigsmyl2:

I am thinking I may give the Lee 185 .312 a try this year sized to about .314 with check in my M91 Westinghouse. It casts pretty fat.

If you place it in the right place bullet should do just fine

Just throw one through the pump house, deer are easy to kill.

Yeah, that's the same bullet I was talking about.

If all else fails...stab them with the bayonet or smack them in the head with the stock...I got Mosins and love the options...more fun than about anything you can do with your clothes on.

The Mosin is quite capable of shooting much heavier boolits at about equal velocity. That and a wide flat nose. However, since you asking about that particular boolit, I assume it's the mold you have. I'm in the flat nose camp, if you do that. How accurate is does your rifle shoot them? Any idea of velocity?

Rest assured that with the 311284 you'll have enough penetration remove the deer's nose with a well timed "Texas heart shot" if you hold your velocity to about 1800 fps and use a reasonably hard alloy... I cannot say myself, because I've never failed to have complete penetration on any of the shots mentioned above using pre-war Marlin 30-30s 170 grain heat treated bullet at 1900 fps... and never needed more the one shot because I'm picky about placement.
A big +1 on the previous poster's recommendation for a shoulder shot, particularly at the shoulder/spine "T" junction.. deer. exotics, hefty pigs, ALL DRT with that placement. Know your quarry's anatomy and put 'er there.
And no I have not (YET) made the bung hole to nose shot on a pig, but I'm still trying. It's come out everywhere but the nose... poor timing on my part.

I have two Mosins and they're both very accurate. THe 91/30 is a real tack driver, in fact.
So far with that bullet it's going about 1550 w/ 16 grains of 2400 (this is the Lee 312-185). Only other load I've done is 7.5 grains of BE, which is scary accurate but maybe not quite deer medicine. I have some Reloader #7 which may be the ticket.
