Today, I got out my new 460 Collarbutton mold and made a few for the .45-70
I just used 50/50 Coww/pure with 3% pewter for these. It was a bit much of tin, but that's what was in the pot from pouring some sharp edged .357s earlier, and that was because that's what size pewter mug I had and I was too lazy to cut it up. I tried to keep the pot close to 700-730 for these. It's pretty tough to keep adjusting that little knob when juggling a thermometer, a ladle, and a hot 4cav mold.

Here's the mold:

And the product.... I think it makes a pretty nifty boolit.
I don't know how they shoot, but they are pretty fun to pour. :lovebooli

Those are some pretty cool looking boolits. They almost look like a shotgun slug. Not bad for an afternoon's work.

I like it. What weight do they drop at? That's a pretty deep lube groove, are they for BP?

They look like cute air gun pellets.

I have that mold, but have not gotten to cast any yet. Thanks for sharing what they look like. Very nice casting. Clean edges all over.

They drop at .461+ and weigh 156gr. They will take a lot of lube, but I'm going to shoot it with Unique. I have read that it's best to just fill the groove up with some soft lube and let 'er rip.

I think I'll also size some down for .45LC and see how that works. 8-)

Never knew I could shoot anything smaller than a 300 grain outta my 45-70s. Thanks for the education!

You can also shoot 458 roundball, 144 grns, dirt cheap.

Somewhere on the board is the original loading table for this boolit and it has some loads that crank out at about 2100 fps. This is a very useful boolit.
