Looking for a little help clearing up an issue. The picture shows the boolit seated by closing the action. The ring in the pic goes the whole circumference of the boolit with the rifiling visible, am i looking at the leade? and is this a good thing?

Not really, size so the throat doesn't shave that ring.

I have a `77 vintage & .310" is absolutely as big a boolit that`ll chamber. I cast the 311041 & it drops WW alloy .3115 & I size in a 309 die & they spring back to 310, when sized in a 310 they come out 3105 & I have to fight the lever.

1 thing I found true though , the microgrooved barrels need plus sized boolits to shoot ! But your `58 got the regular riflin , correct??

I figured, thanks. I would say this rifle has no throat to speak of?

Correct, actually i made a typo its a 53' vintage.

Mine is a later MG. I don't mind the rifling marks but if the throat shaves the nose you have a problem. Mine won't even chamber if the front band is too large and I size 311.

Mine is a 4 land and shoots the 31141 @ .310 good but i guess the fatter nose of the NOE and no throat will have to be sized to .309 Will report back with results. Thanks fellas for the advice.

gotta love these old marlins,,i have a 1948 336a,,that has a .310 bore. I have to use a .312 boolit, then the cartridge wont chamber, cause there is no neck clearence. So, I have to use neck turned cases. But the gun sure does shoot once ya figure this stuff out....

Ok sizing to .309 is better im getting into the lands without hitting the throat. Now I am starting to get out of my comfort zone, and what i mean by this is in order to chamber this bullet I have to trim my brass to 2.010 ( to be able to roll crimp in the groove ) and seat to 2.460 ( just touching the lands ) I have never worked up loads WITHOUT data. I am looking for a little guidance to start. Ranch Dog recommends a min OAL of 2.482 with a max charge of 31.8 grains of 3031. I am going to start my work up @ 26grains.

Never used 3031 but I pushed mine back 0.05" without a problem, LeverE & 4895. I didn't trim, just FCD on the nose section. No setback with the tube full and stout loads.

Lee's rifle factory crimp die will put a crimp wherever you want.

FCD hmmm that sure would save a bunch of trimming and keep my GC in the neck. How bout flare on the mouth, will it affect the function of the crimp die?

"How bout flare on the mouth, will it affect the function of the crimp die?"

Using a 31R M-die, I expand the case mouth to accept a .310" boolit, so the die has plenty of room to accept an expanded case mouth.

Then a 30R flare should work. Thank you

My M plugs are labelled 30, 31R. The 31R works, 30 is too small unless your alloy is really hard. 30 is made for jacketed, same as RCBS size wise.

I have never had an issue with the 30R swaging my .310 31141 boolits cast from 50/50 and water dropped so the 30R should still give about .0025 neck tension and not swage the same alloy, I hope.

Well thanks to some good advice from members here on this thread I am happy so far with my initial testing.

Rifle: 1953 Marlin 336RC, 24" Barrel, 4 Groove Ballard with williams Peep
Load: NOE 311-165RF
50/50 Heat treated alloy
.309 dia
Lars 50/50 lube
27Gr. 3031
OAL 2.460 ( .0015 ) +/- engraving
FCD@ .003 crimp

Target was 50yds off a sand bag with chrono set at 12'. No pressure signs @ all, no leading and velocity over the chrono was an average of 10 shots right at 2079fps. The low was 2045 and the high was 2090. I will now work on sight adjustments and start moving the target out to get minute of whitetail accuracy.

Thanks guys your help and suggestions are appreciated!81866
