i just bought some winchester 231 powder ,it says it is a ball powder ,i never used it before ,or any type of win.powder. it looks like round flat flakes ,to me ball powder is like hod.380 it is like little round balls , the round flat flakes ,is that what win231 is suppose to look like? am working up load for 9-mm now ,thankyou

It's always been flakes, but it ain't the same flakes it used to be.

It started life as little balls.
Then got squished to almost flat.
What you described sounds a lot like what I see when I look at 2312/HP-38.

Silver/gray colored flakes. Haven't used it in years. Haven't seen it on the shelves for a long time either.

Opened up a container I purchased over 25 yrs ago and then one I purchased 6 months ago and both are the same flattened ball flake.

I have used 4.1 grains W-231 for 9mm. 125 grain cast bullet. Worked great in my Browning Hi Power. suggest you try it, but you may want a hotter load.
