Lyman 357443

Anybody have any experience with this Lyman mould? I picked one up cheap, but I haven't seen much written about it.

I have a solid and a HP version. They shoot all right in the .357 Mag but I had kind of mediocre results with both the HP and solid in the .38 Special.

Finally, I realized that there was no reason to work yourself to death getting a bullet to shoot when you had a drawer full that would shoot so I kind of placed them back in the drawer and they've been there since.

It may work in your gun but I didn't have any initial luck with mine in the .38.

Thanks guys! I have a little Rossi 92 carbine that doesn't like to feed SWC designs, but I'm thinking the nose on this one might work out for me. Kind of an interesting looking boolit and and old mould design. I plan to cast some tonight and see how it works.

Don't be afraid to try it. I'm a casual pistol shooter but that bullet casts well and shoots well in my 38 spec revolvers. My one buddy absolutely loves them in one of his revolvers and he is a real pistol shooter unlike me.

I know this is an old thread but I came across some old cast boolits from this mold. They measure .358 and weigh approx. 156 grs. and I plan on shooting them behind 3.9 grains of AA#2.

My question is I do not have a manual that lists this mold and I would like to know the seating depth for 38 special and 357 Magnum as lyman lists it.

I've had an Ideal DC of 357443 for several years, finally cast a batch, they drop at .359. I'll size to .358 and try them in all my 38s and 357s and report back.

My lyman manual does not list this boolit for either cartridge. I does show a photo of the boolit and lists the top punch also but other than that there is no info on it in any cartridge from 9mm on up. The photo looks like it is a slightly heeled? design.

I believe it was the first mold designed specifically for the 357 Mag. I DO have a DC, but haven't even cast with it.

The last Lyman manual that it was listed with data was #41, released in 1957. That is why we don't hear about it today.

It is worth trying, but my advice would be to get a LEE 358 125 RF or 158 RF or LYMAN 358665 and save yourself some aggravation. The NOE 360 180 WFN is also excellent in my 357 MARLINS...and with a gas check you can get some interesting velocities.

I would suggest visiting lasc.us and read Glenn Fryxell's article on 1894 MARLINS and most of his other ones too. The marlinowners.com site has some information you can use also.

Per John Taffin, "a 357 levergun is the third most useful firearm you'll own; just behind a 22 LR pistol and rifle."

I have a Lyman 4 cav in 357443. Shoot it in a blackhawk for my general use plinking load. Size .358", load in .357 mag cases with 5.5gr IMR PB, CCI 500 primers generally, crimped in the ( I assume ) crimp groove. I don't recall overall length. I did chronograph it at 990fps. It shoots well enough to cut the weeds sticking out of the snow at random distances. The bullet seats deep into the case, about like a wadcutter, so I started with .38 Spl powder charges and settled on a moderate velocity load. I do plan on testing using with .38 Spl cases someday because I have a lot more of them.

I finally got some dropped from my old Ideal DC 357443, let'em cure for a couple weeks and then sized to .358. Weighed them and was surprised to find they were consistantly 165 grains sized and loobed. 50-50/ WW-PB, made'm pretty heavy. If they shoot that's good.

Went down to check my logbook. With .357 mag case overall loaded length 1.55". Have also tried 5.5gr Unique - not chronographed and 4.25gr ( ave of 10 throws from fixed powder bushing) of AA#2 which chronographed at 910fps. The bullet shape is unusual. Long body like a wadcutter. Short nose makes it not a wadcutter. Bullet seats deep in case so powder space is reduced. Impression is that full powder charges as used with other bullets of the same weight should not be used. I don't have a need to load heavy loads so I stopped at the first satisfactory load and have used it.
