I've got a savage smokeless muzzle loader. The bore size on mine is a bit too tight for .458 bullets. wondering what a good 300 grain .452 boolit would be. Some expansion would be nice but probably not super important because it's used on deer. It shoot's J bullets very well out to 200 yards.

You might wan to try here. They have a orange sabot for .458 boolits.

The 300 grain Lee RF mold seems to get a lot good reports here. I use a 300 from Accurate Molds and it seems good for me but it a gas check though. I have a Savage too and use AA 5744.

I just looked it up. The article says bullets of .451 or .452 should be used with a .50 cal magnum sabot. And here is I was wondering how they got any accuracy out of a muzzle loader using jacketed slugs. The author says that it performed well with all projectiles tried but gave best accuracy with the Hornady 250gr, 300gr, and a 335gr LBT boolit. The article states that MV's were in the ~2500fps for the 250 & 300gr Hornady, and ~2350 for the 335gr boolit. That's stepping right out there. Says accuracy was very good. HHHMMM................ a ML that burns smokeless powder; sabot rounds; shotgun primer for ignition; Guess I'm just too traditional. If I'm gonna do all that work, I'll put it in a brass case. But for those so inclined, it seems like a nice thing, just not for me.

I've tried the oranges with .458's and it's just too tight. I end up wrecking the tips hammering them down. I've used harvestor .452 crush ribs sabots with .452 bullets and they work great. I don't think it would need a gas check as it's getting a free ride in a sabot. I also shoot 5744.

I tried rcbs 255, 452651, and some Hornaday 300 grain jacketed and had no trouble getting minute of deer accuracy. I have to use iron sights where I am but I have read about people scoping them and shooting 1 MOA.
They are kinda special using smokeless but you can still use black and black substitutes. I had more 45-300Gs at the time and hunted with them.
