A 155gr hard cast Darr-lubed gas-checked .311 sized boolet on top of 16.2gr of Rel7 inside of a berdan-boxer-converted russian steel case.

Like I said, interesting ;)

I'll sign on to watch the test. What method of case conversion did you use?

My sizing die and a lot of force. Popped out both the berdan primer and the anvil. :)

Do we have a tutorial on converting cases? I can make one...
Converting x54r cases is similar, but different.

EDIT: I see we have one on x54r cases, but not x39.
I tried the same process for the x54 cases on the x39 with SRP, with poor results.

Pix? I would like to see that primer pocket.

Which one? The LRP modded one, or the SRP modded one?

Both. What might not work for one person might work for another person.

I apologize for the unscientific process but here it goes...

First thing I did was find a drill bit that was a similar diameter to the flash hole on a 45acp case.
The 45 uses a large pistol primer, so I would want the flash amount to be relatively the same from a SRP in a B(erdan)LRP pocket.

So I took that drill bit and proceeded to ***** about 3 cases since I was spinning the bit into a still case, the bit would wander off the anvil and drill a sideways hole and snap off and all sorts of other fun stuff.
Then I switched to using this method of drilling: http://vik-olliver.blogspot.com/2010/02/drilling-down-middle.html
Which, if you have any idea how a lathe works, its the same thing.

After I batched about 30 or so perfectly drilled holes I used the same scientific process to find a drill bit that was slightly smaller than the primer pocket on a 45 ACP case.
Using the previous hole as a pilot I was able to drill out the remainder of the cap of the BLRP.
Running it though my RCBS LRP swager yielded this result: (which is a once-fired case... well twice fired if you count the factory load that was fired as well)

I made 12 of them, 9 of which my SKS decided to throw about 2 miles @ 2 o'clock in front of the firing line, which at my indoor range I am not allowed to cross. Ever.

Since my SKS hates me (must have been that damp safe, it was just 1 month, get over it!) I found a less labour-intensive process to convert the steel (brass?).

Basically you slowly run it though your sizing die with the depriming pin set back as far as you can get it. You MAY break the pin. (I have not) but they are easy and cheap to replace... on RCBS dies anyway...

Most of them come out beautiful:

Some require some finishing in order to get the primer to seat:

Load them up:

This target I only added to show the factory wolf at the same distance from the same gun with the same near-sighted glasses-wearing too-lazy-to-scope-the-sks idiot shooting it:

Aren't the primer pockets of the Berdan cases a different diameter than Boxer cases. I have read that some have to use a sealant/glue to keep them from falling out?

Yes, I use HF brand super glue.
Works just fine.

I did a bunch of brass cases and built this handy lil' drill aid .Bolt down the drill vise aligned w/the case and bit lock the case in the V notch and drill about .1 deep size and decap as normal boxer cases.

The bit is 1/16, #8 set screw , 4-6'' of hardware store 5/16 rod for 30 cal lapped to slip fit in the fired cases.
It took me about an hr and half for the 1st and 20 min for the 3rd.

80442

It drills in through the case mouth using the neck as an alignment guide.
A rendition of the bearing press and ball bearing pocket shrinking method served me. Please see the berdan sticky.

Way to GO!

I am going to start saving those cases instead of just tossing them in to the recycle bucket.

YIKES.

I wish I had them back.

Orrr you could send them to me!

Or you could make a simple bushing that fits the primer pocket and use a 1/16" drill bit.

Stub Length bits work better, they are stiffer than regular Jobber length drills.

A variation of the above drill extension can be made to convert any bit into a stub length bit by simply only letting 1/4" of the bit stick out.

Finally got a scope for the SKS...

Man did those groups tighten up.

Some girl rented a gun and offed herself at my ranges 50yd indoor range, so I had to use the pistol range, which is 25 yds.

I'll upload target pictures soon. They're very promising.
