Got a Ruger #1 Tropical in .405 Winchester last Friday. Quite a thumper with 300gr Hornady FN factory loads at about 2200fps. Teddy Roosevelt called it "My Big Medicine" and said it killed on one end and maimed on the other. Already casting for my 45/70 Pedersoli Sharps and thinking about moulds and stuff to work up some more moderate loads for range and hunting. Not much to choose from in the .40 cal rifle bullet moulds. Haven't slugged the barrel yet but supposed to be about .411. If I really develop a love affair with the caliber I plan to get another in an 1895 Winchester. Always liked the lines of one of the biggest leverguns and, now that my profile is starting to look like TR's, I'd even stand for a few photos. Always wanted a safiri jacket too. :):):)

swampsavage;
I have a friend who casts for his .405. He says for lighter loads he uses .41 Mag. cast boolits. He also says there are some 245 to 250 grain boolits available for the .41 that should do great in his .405 for lighter hunting loads - like for deer.
He does not have the heavier moulds, just says has read about the boolits from them. I, also, have read about 250+ grain .41 boolits, but never about who makes the moulds or sells the boolits.
I would think a 220 grain, cast soft, might get up to about 240 - 245.

Yes, I cast for .405 Winchester. I rechambered a 14" .41 Magnum TC barrel to .405 Winchester years ago. I had Mountain Molds make a mould for me for a 300 grain GCFP bullet that shoots quite nicely at about 1900 fps. 4895 is a fine powder for the .405 Winchester.

I cast two bullets for my 405.
I found a 300 grain bullet on Ebay from NEI that does well.
And I had Mountain Molds make one using his bullet design feature that throws a 350 grain bullet.
I like my design better then the NEI design. Think of a wadcutter, it's blunt nosed round point with a gas check, bore riding nose. Packs plenty of thump at both ends and off hand is accurate out to 200 yards with a resounding thump on the gong.
I used jacketed bullet loading data for all of my cast bullet shooting.

If ya want to see what a 410gn hard cast soft nose shot from a 405 win at 2000 fps muzzle velocity does to a moose sholder thats standing about 150 yards from the shooter check out the "we got one " thread at the hunting with cast boolits forum.
