I am curious if anyone has tried to clean up the base after casting. I know the base is critical even with a gas check. maybe file the base slightly?

What are you trying to clean up? It would seem to me to be more efficient to just throw it into the pot and recast. If it is just a minor flaw you could use them for short range plinkers. If it is real bad, you should just reject it.

I'm referring to minor flashing, and the sprue cut.

I scrape off flashing with my thumbnail. Minor flashing gets sised and lubed as normal and is swaged back into the boolit.

No, all you need is a sharp base edge. Sprue cuts or a small divot do not affect the boolit.

I and a friend bought a bunch of boolits from a fellow at a gunshow for a great price. They sucked! The bases were nasty. They leaded like mad and shot terribly. I found the bases were not square. I filed some clean and it helped. Alox helped some. CF Ventures wax wads helped a lot with the leading. Melting them and cutting with soft was the best.

I sometimes have a little flashing, and it turns into a "skirt" when sizing nose-first. I give the base of a bullet a couple of passes (rotating between passes) across a sheet of 180 grit sandpaper.

Flashing can be cured but a thumbnail works too.

Ditto.

If it too big for this, remelt it.

Bump/hole on/in the base is irrelevant, only the corner needs to be clean
and consistent for accy, like 44man already said.

I disremember my motivations, but I have polished them flat on a board.
