Since I have no heater and the one that Lyman makes does not fit the Lyman 45, I have 3 LBs of pan lube sitting around, but its kind of hard. Its made from 1LB beeswax 1 LB of Paraffin wax 1 LB of Vaseline and a spoon full of STP.

If I add more Vaseline to it will it soften it up enough to use it in the Lyman 45 with out the heater.
Assuming that you can melt it and pour it in the lube tube.

Re-melt your lube and add about 5 - 6 oz. more petroleum jelly. You should end up with a mixture that will go through your Lyman 45 just fine.

With regard to " Melt and Pour ", take a look at this :

Cut a 2x6 about 12" long and then cut a piece of sheet metal to match and screw it down to the 2x6 and then then mount the Lyman 45 to the 2x6 and then place an electric iron on the sheet metal. As the metal heats up, it will transfer to the Lyman 45 and soften the lube in the Lyman.

thanks Bruce, I seen the video of some one with a homemade heater and used a travel iron, that I so happen to have(well it is my wife's she don't know I have it yet.)

So I am going to check around for a piece of aluminum.

start on low heat or you'll have lube squirting everywhere real quick!

There's a way to try this without actually building anything.

Just lean the iron vertically against the back of the sizer and turn it on. Once the sizer is warm to the touch, try it to see if the lube flows properly. You can turn the iron on and off, move it out of the way, do your biz, then as things stiffen up, put it back there. That's the brute force way. Or you can turn the heat down on the iron.

when my casting room is real cold, I use the magnetic engine block heater.
When it's not so cold, I use a old clothes iron, because of the built in thermostat.

Yeah, I use it to preheat the boolits also. I believe lube adhere's to warm boolits better than to cold boolits. It also makes soft tacky lubes "skin over" quickly for less messy handling.
Good Luck,
Jon

I will post a picture some day of my heater platform. I took a piece if 1/4" aluminum plate 4" wide and cut on piece 4" and one piece 11". Stacked them and drilled holes to match my 450 mounting holes and bolted to my work bench. Doesn't take but a minute or so to warm the plate enough during the Summer. Any more heat and it will make a mess.

No reason to even get that fancy with a heater. A clamp on 110 volt lamp fixture available at any farm supply store with a 100 watt bulb give all the heat you'll need.

I think you may be talking about one of these.

^ +1 Again watch the temp as you can turn the lube to liquid in nothing flat. I use one of these over the unlubed boolits to get them warm--seems to help lubing process

thank you guys, much food for thought.

Just a quick question is there any way to date of manufacture on a Lyman 45 luber sizer. Mine used to have a rectangular label on it and it has a U over a 2. Was just wondering.

not sure on actual dates per say but the oldest had the "spoked open" ummm dust cover ( oxymoron huh ? lolz ) same as ye olde #1 and the shoulder bolt pivot on the handle , they also used to have a gold with red sticker in place of the later clear one , the newer ones had the aluminum dust cover , a captive pin ( w/ cotter key) and the clear label , i dont know why but i prefer the older ones with the shoulder bolt
