Just got my new lee mold and was just wondering if I need to use a gas check with a load of h-110 behind it ? they are cast from straight coww and water dropped, sized to .430 and pan lubed with darr's . I will be shooting them from my 7 1/2 ruger SBH.

You can shoot them with no gas check.

You will pay a penalty in accuracy.

A high performance load such as that will want a gas check.
To shoot with no gas check use a faster powder and shoot reduced loads. They will be very accurate as long as the velocity is kept down (.44 special velocities)

You will change the drive length of the boolit so it might need a different velocity. Might be as small as 1/2 gr of H110. You will not have much luck shooting it too slow.

Not to disagree, but from what I understand, according to 44man, these bullet like to be drive fast to get good accuracy. I also have the same bullet and right now , my son is opening up the gas check shank to except a .016 alum gas check. Now I'm trying to decide what powder to use. I have 296,2400,4227,Unique,231 Blue Dot, Green Dot, Red Dot. So many powders, too many choices. I'd like to keep around 1000-1200 fps.

When in doubt, I'd try the gas check first, then take notes. You have all the right powders, it should be fun with all the possible combinations. As a side note, I apply a "plain base" gas check to all my plain base bullets, just my personal choice (no need to modify a perfectly good mold). Lol!

thanks for the info fellas. I have a good choice of powders,It seems that a charge of 21.5 gr of h-110 is the go to for most folks . I also have gas checks comming .

You may be right. The one I shot without the gas check was the 240 grain SWC (I think).
It shot very well at .44 special speeds in a Ruger SBH

Be prepared for the recoil! That load is an arm twister in the SRH I shoot.
