.454 200 Grain for 45-70?

I've never paper patched but though if this is doable then I'm in for my first run

I thought this could make for a cool gallery type load for for 45-70

Can it be done? I'm going to do some more digging in the stickies. Thanks guys!

Yes it can. I often patch up 45 ACP boolits for my Marlin 1895CB. They go really fast if you want, but don't hit to the sights or anywhere close. Size to .452" and patch to .460". The Lee TL-230-TC works particularly well. It also works well sized to .442" and patched up for 45 caliber muzzle loaders.

My .45 muzzleloader is a .458 bore diameter with a 24" twist to take advantage of the availability of rifle molds. The RCBS 45-255 SWC happens to do well paper patched.

Great to hear that.
I basically want to coax these suckers out of the barrel. As long as I can get some accuracy at 50 yards and maybe keep them as quiet as the round ball loads I would be happy. It's either that or buy a collar button mold. I figured this would save the trouble and push me to finally try some paper patching.

Now for some more reading. I need to find some paper first I guess. Any suggestions?

For this, almost anything fairly thin will work. Try regular lined notebook paper. It is fragile when wet but with some practice it's not hard to patch boolits with it. You should be able to get near one hole accuracy at 50 yards if you do it right.

Seet. That's what I want to know.
Is it harder to wrap a small boolit like this, I figure I'll get it wrapped to just barely on the start of the ogive. It should be a smooth transition to the rifling as its such shot boolit and shouldn't be interfering with the throat fit right?

I thought this could make for a cool gallery type load for for 45-70Gallery matches normally don't allow 45-70 reloads. The calibers shot offhand are in the 22 to 38 range.
To me sounds like one has a lot of 45 Colt bullets, doesn't want to buy a proper PP mold and possibly is shy of felt recoil.

No colt bullets just some light 45 acp bullets. I don't have a fear of recoil at all. I load plenty of stout 45-70 for a marlin lever gun. I had tried some round ball loads and they shot well, but I figured this would be a push into paper patching and also cover the same use as the round balls. Quiet plinking and or close range varmint dispatching. I want a gallery type load not to shoot gallery matches.
This has more to do with interest in a collar button mold and wanting to try similar weight bullets first.

I'm using 200 gr SWC's patched with tracing paper from Staples. You can find a printer template at Marlin Owners. Was hoping for accuracy to justify entering the marlin owners postal match, but haven't succeeded yet. Otherwise, a great walkin' around load (25-50 yards) for groundhogs in the 45-70.
