I recently finished building a 30 / 06 Springfield " MauserField ". It is a 98' Mauser with a brand new unfired RA-44, 03' Springfield , 2 groove barrel. Today I decided to take it to the range and see how it shot ? ?

Today I shot the Lyman 311467 , sized .3095 thru a Lee push thru sizer then lubed with a Lyman H & I .311 die .

The load was 27.0 grs. of IMR 4895 with a WLR primer.
Range was 75 yards, The 1st shot is a fouling shot and struck low................, look at the next 4 rounds ! ! !

BTW, the white inner portion of the aiming square is 1 sq. inch.

The Ghost of Guy Loverine strikes again!!!

Do me a favor and put a micrometer on the top two bands of that 311467 bullet and report back what they measure... pretty please!

Thats a nice shooting rifle!, especially considering you just started loading for it. You may have gotten the perfect load first try, but it doesn't happen often. It might do even better with some tinkering, but it would be hard to prove it with a group like that. Did you shoot any more groups after it was fouled?

I shot 4 more 5 shot groups out of a box of 50 rds.
Most shot about 3/4 " for 5 shots.....None beat the load that you saw the pics of.

Charger:

The 2 top bands of this particular 311467 are measuring .3038 "

That's awesome! I built an 03-A3 in 308 and have a bunch of these cast but haven't sized or loaded any. I have been wondering how do this, i.e. how many groves do you fill with lube, and how deep do you seat them. How were these? What lube? What OAL?

Ben... Thanks for the measurment. I am a fan of 311467 and I have noticed quite a variety of top two band diameter in these molds. I have seen them run .302 and .302, 304 and .306 and a few more variations.

I lube the bottom 4 grooves and try and seat the bullet with the gas check flush with the bottom of the case neck. Depending on the throat wear and diameter of the top two bands, this depth may or may not work.

Lately I have been sizing the top two bands .301 and letting them ride on top of the lands. Seem to work very well.

don 45 :

Q. how many groves do you fill with lube?
A. Top 3 rings are empty with no lube. Those 3 rings however get Lee Liquid Alox. All other rings get lubed with the mixture described below.

Q. how deep do you seat them ?
A. This is the load and OAL ( Keep in mind this is shot out of the 30/06 ...not the .308 Win. )..........
27.0 IMR 4895, 311467, WLR Primer, OAL 3.328 , bullet dia. .3095 sized with a Lee Push Thru sizer.

Q. What lube?
A. My own lube ....a mixture of Costal Brand Black Moly Grease, Beeswax, Johnson's Paste Wax, and a " touch " of Dextron II Transmission Fluid.

I bought one of those molds but haven't seen anything too spectacular yet. Now I will give it a little more effort. that is some fancy shooting!

That is great shooting, by rifle AND load AND shooter. I think you're in high clover.

This morning I went out back and measured a dozen of my 311467 bullets. These are straight WW, cast fast at 870 degrees and water-dropped from a 4-cavity mould. The front two bands on these 12 bullets measure from .3038" to .3042". Half-a-thousandth variation from four cavities ain't all that bad.

The as-cast base bands are all very close to .314". (All measurements were made at 90 degrees from the mould parting line.) This diameter makes for considerable versatility.

In personal experience, I must confess to obtaining better results with the 150-grain 311466 than with its heavier 311467 brother, but there's plenty of trials yet to come.

Hello BruceB:

I also have the 311466. Obviously I'll have to give it a try also in this particular barrel. I had put a lot of sweat into building this particular rifle, ie. the Bold Trigger, bedding , fitting, finishing, and shaping the stock.

It is always very rewarding to see a " good return " for your efforts. I was very pleased with the rifle yesterday.

I read a lot of good things about the 311284 in the 2 groove barrels. I recently purchased a brand new 311284. I was fortunate to purchase one that has a nose of .301 which makes for a snug fit in my Springfield barrel.

I'm amazed at how smooth, bright and shiny these 2 groove Remington barrels are. Makes you wonder with war time production rates how such accurate barrels could be produced ?

Interesting thred and darned fine shooting. If first froups are any indication then the squirrels are NOT going to like your rifle. I've been working with a 311291 and frankly have been waiting to see some results with a Lyman 30 bullet. I guess I better change my sizer over to .309 and get busy. CB.

I don't own stock in Lee Precision, but a few yrs. ago, I decided ( after seeing bullets sized off center in my Lyman 45 ) to try nose 1st sizing with the Lee Push Thru sizing dies.

My groups were cut dramatically in a variety of rifles and a variety of calibers...7 mm, .30, .35 ...., no more bullets sized off center. I use an H & I die that is .002 larger to lube with ( Lube only - no sizing )

I'll stay with this system until someone can show and prove to me that there is a better sizing system out there.......

Best,
Ben
