Has anybody used any fiber optic front sites in combination with an arppeture (spelling) site.

If so how tough are they for field purposes, and what is the tougher brands.

I recently picked up a ruger 10/22 with fiber optic sites, and was amazed at the site picture with these somewhat wore out eyes.

I use them a lot turkey hunting and have broke my fair share. Small (tiny) diameter will be your main issue since you are trying to pick it up through an aperture. Tru glo or hi viz is ok. Wont break the bank anyway.

FWIW, I've used FO sights ever since they were first introduced, many years ago, and have yet to damage even one - in fact, every one of my sighted rifles carry them.

The front beads are available (from the various makers: Williams, Hi-Viz, TruGlo, T/C, etc) in at least 3 different colors, depending upon one's vision and/or color perception (everybody's different), and in the same 2 sizes as regular Gold/Ivory bead front sight blades: Fine- 1/16" or Coarse-3/32", besides different heights for different applications and a wide or narrow sight base width, depending upon if the sight's to be ramp-mounted or mounted directly in a barrel dovetail.

Williams is the only company to offer matched (size) sets - the Williams FireSight Set(s):

I only have experience with 2. First is on a TC Black Mountain Magnum .50 cal. muzzle loader and I busted the front "optic" part of it the second time in the brush hunting. The site still works without the glow thing so that's the way it still is. Second is a Williams set that I got for my Dad, at his request, to mount on his Ruger Single-Six. He loved it which was great as it helped him quite a bit. He is no longer with us and the SS is now mine to use and I don't care for that sight, so will go back to original before I shoot it much. Gunsmith I know says he is set up to drill out the broken glass parts of them and re-install new pieces so I guess they are easy fixes. JW

I use FO's on my Glocks and would like them on my .223's as well. The green ones show up better in the bright sun and fading light as well. I originally used the 3/32 tubes on the Glocks, but as stated above the larger the dot the less accurate you will be.

My Glocks all have 1/16" tubes now and they are bright enough to pick up instantly in the sun and when racing. They also give you a more precise point of aim so I shoot better with them.

For a gun you are using for hunting in low light the green ones would probably work better as well. You sight in so that the dot is the POI, then with a Peep sight you just put the dot where you want the bullet to go, and let fly.

The good thing is that most FO sights come with both green and red tubes and it is pretty easy to change them out. I have broken a couple of tubes from rough handling but this is no big deal since you can change them out in a minute or so.

You should not be happy with which color until you have tried both. One will work for you for sure.
