If you want to shoot one the cheap, cheaper than current 22lr prices, or close to it.

Start looking for something that shoots 7.62x54r. :)

Lots of cheap surplus ammo avail yet and rifles on the cheap too.

I'm stocking up for the kids for later. :)

880 rnds for $200 or less :)

Is ammo back on stock for it? It use to be pretty dirt cheap not to long ago. I really miss the cheapness off the 7.62x25

widener's (http://wideners.com/itemview.cfm?dir=18|830|853) had it. 880 rounds for 199.99 plus shipping, your choice of Russian or Bulgarian.

Delivered, it works out to two bits a round, more of less. Corrosive. Non-reloadable steel cases. Good for fun, just make sure you follow protocols for clean-up after firing corrosive ammo unless you want to rust the rifling out of your barrel.

And Mosin-Nagant 91/30's are still out there for less than a couple of hundred bucks so you'll have something to shoot it in.

Not looking for a fight, but have you shot one of these? After 40 rounds through my son's Mosin-Nagant I wouldn't have pulled the trigger again for $100 - and I've happily fired 150 full boat 3" loads through my 12 gauge. Not to mention the noise :)

I'd still buy one, they're quite accurate and 'inexpensive' to shoot, but definitely not something I'd recommend for a new / smaller shooter.

My answer to the problem of scarce 22 ammo would be to load lead into any rifle caliber and shoot, shoot, shoot. Not everyone likes all that recoil and commotion anyway. Not that there's anything wrong with it of course.

Even if a guy was fool enough to pay 100 bucks a brick for 22 ammo, it is still cheaper, so not seeing the cheaper part.

It is a good excuse to get another gun though. lol

My MN 91/30 kicks less than my 270. Full length barrel tho. i hear the carbines are real killers on both ends.

Need to put a recoil tamer on the end to help your shoulder out - that and a recoil pad.

www.tickbitesupply.com has a really soft butt pad for the Mosin that tames the recoil way down. Plus I am reloading with 13 grains fo red dot behind a 160 grain boolit, that kicks a LOT less. Finding brass is hard though.

I agree with this!! More than 40 rounds with this rifle is PUNISHING!! Good thing about it is Ammo lasts longer!!

Cabela's online has .22LR bricks in stock a couple times a week over the past few months.
Have ordered a couple bricks lately at less than $30 shipped (550 rounds).

Just sign up to be notified when it comes in stock, then place your order within about 15 minutes.

Slickdeals dot net is another great place to sign up for instant notification when ammo comes in stock.

Sure beats hanging out at Walmart.

(not hording or reselling for profit, keep 1000 on hand and sell the rest to local friends for what I paid).

Check out the military loads section. Gallery loads of 7 grains of pistol/shotgun powder behind a cast bullet kicks like a .22. Is easy on the cases. I bought a box of 20 brass rounds for under 20 bucks and had picked one up every paycheck until I had 100 rounds. Makes it fun to shoot and brings zero to 100 yards.

If you want a real thrill, shoot a full-bore round in a Mosin-Nagant M-44 in the dark. You and passersby will be impressed.

Actually, with some brass cases and cast boolits, the gun is fun to play with.

Thank you for the info. I have not started to load for this rifle yet (still getting my 223 going)!

Very fun to play with.
I can imagine the fireball at night. Mine is fairly impressive during the day!

Shoot your game animal at close range and broil it at the same time...
