I know what animal I think it is, but lets see what you all think it is. I'll release the location after an appropriate amount of guessing and BS'ing have taken place.

Most assuredly a canine of some sort- I see at least 2-3 toe nail marks and no U shaped indention at front of main pad nor a three-lobed distinction at rear of main pad. Looks like a mature animal but without scale and location impossible to give better guess. chupacabra anyone :)

Dog version unknown. Can see few toenail marks. Guess yote by size vs. grain size of dirt. don't know your dirt. Best guess would be Lab.

I would guess dog, wolf, or coyote? Length and width of tracks would help. location would also help (terrain and state).

Trying to learn enough to ID tracks properly... Anyone know any good websites to help a person get started?

This picture was taken in the middle of no where outside of Huntsville, AL. The closest house is miles away and they don't own a dog. Very interesting indeed.

Bobcat! You live in Alabama so has to be a cat. All dogs leave nail print with long narrow toes.So if you have the cats paw then I say you did it.If a Bobcat can drag down a grown deer, then I would say they get big enough.

If you had not revealed the location, I'd have guessed wolf.

As such unless one of the government's invaders has really drifted off course ..... I'd guess a wolf hybrid.

I killed a bob that had paws 2 inches across. Quite a spectacular cat.

It is definitely not a feline the middle pad is not correctly shaped. It definately canid as the track is longer than it is wide and there are a couple of visible claw impressions. As a matter of fact it is identicle in shape, size, and form as the tracks that are made by my English Mastif.

Best wishes

It's not just Alabama. I wouldn't go to Florida, either. They have crocodiles in Florida. [shudder...]

You can get eaten in Florida.

If a guy took a walk on a beach in Florida, and a croc came storming out of the water and ate him, what would that look like?

It would look like a missing person case, that's what it would look like.

Tell me, you guys got any unsolved missing person cases in Florida?

Yeah, that's what I thought.

No Florida for me.

I would say a dog for sure. Probably about 80-100lbs. If it's a really wild one I would assume that the tracks are within 50yds of a creek and heading down hill. I have seen 80lb labs make some pretty big prints in soft mud. The time the pic was taken is pretty critical

Cat track, round. Canine, elongated, narrower. Size, probably a cougar/puma/mountain lion, whatever you want to call it. I shot a 60 # bobcat in '76, its track was not half that. Look at link below. Only thing I see different is the point on the rear pad. This may be a front paw print. They have been sighted all over TX. There have been recorded kills all over south-central to east TX. There is a site that shows all documented sightings and kills.

http://www.bear-tracker.com/cougar.html

Edit TPWD brochure on Mountain Lions in Texas with map of documented kills. Note: only goes to 2005

answer please....!!!

I'm not sure what it is. When I first saw the track (1st post) I thought it had to be a cat. Then I got the other pictures. Now I'm not sure. Shouldn't be any big cats in that part of Alabama. Shouldn't be any wolves either. It is undeveloped, untouched property with no homes near it.

fouronesix
07-24-2013, 10:04 PM
It has all the features of a canine track- none of the features of a feline track. So nope, it's not Mr. Bill and it's not George but I'm strongly suspecting Dolly :)

Didn't realize it was Alabama. Remember, there is a population in FL, not really that far. Look at this. BTW, there are plenty of stories on my deer lease, Jasper Co. E. TX, about cougar sightings. Not sure, never been a big believer, but have seen some questionable tracks. Possible. But the way I see it, as many "Bubbas" and "bubba, jrs".(no offense meant) are in the woods up there, someone would have nailed one and posted on FACEBOOK "Look what I got!". LOL

malapais,, that is a word that i havent used in a while. Have had a horse or ten turn over with me in them however catching wild cows in Arizona, its never fun being on the underside of a horse wreck, but toss in some black rocks and it takes it to a whole nuther level.

I honestly believe that is a mountain lion, puma whatever you want to call it. Look at the main pad print that's a cats paw. Now... I live in pa.. The game commision swears that there are not mountain lions in pa. I have personally heard one scream, my brother saw one walk across the road in front of him and my mother saw one dead on the road on her way to get groceries and on the way home it was gone (she is in a wheelchair or she would have stopped). Lets remember that mountain lions are nomads. They roam...

Gator 45/70 All my life I've heard about them. A buddy and I saw a pair of eyes while rabbit hunting near the Neches river marshes one night. They were red and about 4 inches apart. Watching a rabbit we were aiming at--it disappeared into the night. Never have seen any nor talked to someone who had seen one. Know one was killed on the Sabine years ago. I agree, they are nomads and I've had people on my lease who claim to have seen tracks. I still think that if more were around, somebody would have shot it and the pic posted on Facebook.
