Had anyone ever used .224 bullets made from 22 LR cases for anything besides 25 Yd. plinking ??
OR to more to the point, what level of accuracy do you get. I found some for sale, but thought I'd ask how they shot.

I use them for varmint shooting ground squirrels, rock chucks, anything up to coyotes.
once you put some effort out you can learn to manipulate the bullet to make it act like a fmj to an explosive varmint bullet and anything in between...

Prairie Dogs to 175 yds. Just haven't shot them at anything farther.

Duh....I misread the original post. Thanks for the responses, I have seen this numerous times but I avoid the swaging forum like the plague. It looks like a new kind of porn I can't afford.

I'm guessing that would require slightly less that 2 MOA ??

22lr brass as a jacket produced "ok results". I'm getting about a half inch at hundred yards. They fragment on impact, and are great varmint rounds. You also get the added bonus of a nearly free projectile.

I bought about 20K "Junkyard" bullets from an estate sale a few years ago and I am slowly working my way through them.
They have a large HP and are VERY explosive.
Accuracy has been around 1 MOA with the ones I have.
I weigh and visually sort them and load them in different weight groups.
The ones I have started coming apart in the air when they were pushed beyond 3300FPS. They seen to shoot the best in the 3100-3150 FPS range.
Mine were swaged in Corbin dies. I talked to Dave Corbin at a gun show 2 years ago and he says he gets $800 per set for his dies. This price does not include the swage press. Start up cost is high.
I suspect he is very far behind in production with the current ammo shortage......dale

I am still waiting for the balance of my dies but many guys are talking sub MOA accuracy. that is plenty good for my AR & shooting out to 200yds. I doubt I save any $$ making them but I'll always have them when others can not find them. A buddy just sent me about 4K rds of 22lr brass, so I am way more than ready to swage on.

I would call 1/2MOA way better than ok results. I will be thrilled w/ 1MOA.

That can be the case, but only IF you want it to. Truth be known, you can spend a lot of money, or can spend much less. It all depends on what you want for equipment and dies. I'm a Type 06, manufacture for resale, so I went the expensive Corbin route, with several thousand $ invested. Long waits, but a good product. I also shoot bench rest, as in competition. So, I can make good use of the extras. And, they'll pay off easier, due to quantity and resale.

Now, if you were to use a reloading press, like a heavy duty Lee or a Rock Chucker, buy your dies from someone that makes them much more economically, like BT Sniper (who's on this forum, check the swaging area), then the price drops considerably, and you're able to recoup your investment. I'll bet you could get into a 224 set, with derimming die for about or under $500 or so. Sounds like a lot, but that would buy how many bullets currently, and that's IF you could find them.

I made a die that works in my loading press. I didn't get too involve in it but it may be of interest that I filled the 'jackets' with solder making them 'boned core'. An interesting thing about solder is that it can be quite hard if you want. You can basically solder with any alloy containing some tin. Lino should work.

Anyway, I flame heated the upright hulls and fed the acid core solder in until the hull was fill to the mouth. Thereafter I swaged them in my die which produced a 62gr soft point spitzer. I did fire some into a catch medium with my hornet.

That was about the time that BTSniper was starting out. He has a sticky I think.
