I recently purchased a Miha Ruger Only 454 diameter 325 gr Gas Check mould and cast a few from straight wheel weights - air cooled.

The only 45 gas checks I have on hand are some very old Hornady 45 cal rifle checks and they simply do not fit - too small.

What should I be using or doing here??

thanks

Not sure about the Hornady but some 45 checks are rifle and some are pistol. I think the shank diameters are different. Again just general info I "heard on the internet"

I have some lyman 45 checks. If you want I could send you a few to try. I'm trying to round up some Hornady or gator checks to try on my 459-460 diameter boolits.

That s the first time I ever heard there was a difference between gas checks for a rifle and revolver, is this true?

No, the gas check shanks are the same size. However, some makes (e.g. Gator) make rifle and pistol gas checks that differ in the thickness of the material from which they are stamped. They remain interchangeable, but the thicker checks may cost a little more.

Makes sense that rifle and pistol checks in 45 caliber would be different sizes as the slugs themselves are different sizes also.

What 45 handgun and rifle rounds are you guys talking about? I load 45 Colt for my Blackhawk and Puma, and they're the same round with the same checks. I don't use checks on the 45/70 , the 45 ACP or on most of the 45 Colt; but the loads that do use checks use the same ones.

Here, for example, is the information on Gator 45 caliber gas checks:

.45 / .452 Pistol (thin); Max Shank= 0.426
.45 / .458 Rifle (thick); Max Shank= 0.426

The shank diameters are the same. The gas checks are interchangeable between rifle and pistol bullets. I've done it thousands of times. My personal preference is to buy the thick checks and use them exclusively, but when they are in short supply I will use the thinner checks. I've never seen a difference in performance.

Take care, Tom

After doing a little reading I have opened up the gas check just a bit to get it on the bullet and then it sizes on just fine. Problem solved.

thanks all
