i couldn't decide if this needed to be in the lube section. i'm planning to pick up a .357 or .44 levergun and i'm only casting tumble lube designs so far. with the longer barrel, will there be enough lube with 45/45/10? thanks

I use TL for everything. Short answer is yes. You might have to have a thicker coating for higher pressure/speed.
Wrong forum for sure, this is for shotguns. I would have put it in Cast Boolits forum. No big deal.

I ran a test in my 45 colt lever gun using standard groove bullets and LLA and I did not get any leading at all. I usually use a lubesizer for the levergun bullets as it keeps the magazine tube and loading gate area much cleaner.

I tumble lube for a .44 mag lever gun, heavy bullet over stout does of h-110, no leading good accuracy, takes deer/hogs with aplomb. it is a gas checked load, but my milder every day shootin load for said lever gun ain't exactly whimpy and its also tumble lubed with no gas check at about 1200 fps no problems, good accuracy. hope this helps.

Let me begin by saying I never liked tumble lube bullets !

Now when I first started I tumble lubed for the 45-70 with the Lee 457-340 and 457-405 both plain base and both regular lube grooves . I used to tumble lube these bullets unsized and they worked great in a Marlin 1895CB 45-70 .

Biggest thing that bothered me with tumble lubing was the stuff on the nose . True you could clean it off with solvent and a paper towel but thats a PITA .

I used all of the Ranch Dog designed bullets with the tunble lube grooves , but I ran them all thru a Lyman 4500 and lubed in shall we say the traditional fashion and they worked well also !

I use the TL 358-158-SWC with LLA in a Winchester M-92 estimated velocity is 1600 fps with good results and no leading.

I use the lee micro groove 158 grain SWC in a marlin 1894 357 magnum cowboy, works just fine. I will admit cleaning off the noses does get old though and Im thinking of switching to the lubesizer.

If you do it the way Ranch Dog does it you can eliminate the need to wipe the noses off . But by doing it his way it also slows down the tumble lube process as he uses a pair of small channel locks to hold each bullet and dip it in his LLA and then set it base down on wax paper or a cookie sheet .

I used to dip the bullets in the lube the way RD says and tried the 45/45/10 just tumbling them and I haven't noticed a build up in the tube and they shoot just fine. The minor amount you get in the loading gate is a non issue.

I have used tumble lubed bullets for some time and generally do not care whether there is lube on the nose or not. Usually lube them about 2X and they work fine. They can also help for borderline sizes like the 120 grain 30 cal I use in my 32-20, as the lube can add a slight increase in diameter.
