Comin' in from the Floyd Boolit Shop a bit ago, reached for the handle on the slidin' door and this dude was hangin' on the trim. Dang! Good thing I had my 1911 on my hip. I b'lieve that bad boy could skid timber with them pincers!

Yep a Dobson fly AKA a grampus, we would catch those things and use them for fish bait when I was a kid. They start out without wings and with much shorter pinchers and can be found under leaves or rocks on a creek or river bank, at that stage they are extremely mean&nasty little critters that will pinch very painfully if given the chance -I know this all too well! After they get big like that one they are still just as ugly but those long extended pinchers are quite harmless at that stage, still they sure are super ugly!

Make sure you kill 'im with the first shot. They charge when they're wounded!

I'm not Jim but that ugly critter is a Dobson fly, also known in some areas as a Grampus. Once they mature to the flying stage those wicked looking pinchers become quite harmless since at that length they apparently can't get enough leverage to do any harm -not so when they are younger however! When they are in the crawling stage those pinchers are short, sharp and quite powerful/painful as I can attest from personal experience when I was a youngster.

Red says it's a Dobson Fly, I have no clue what it is and don't care. I know one thing for sure and certain: That dude so much as looks at me cross eyed and I'll be puttin' the first notch in the grip of my new 1911.

Thats good bait. My Grandfather used to catch them and throw them under his hat until he got to shore. He threw the stone catties into shore for me to deal with getting in the bucket. I think he just had fun watching me try to grab the catties. I never understod how he could have a dozen of them bugs crawling through his hair.

[QUOTE=Jim;2287893]Comin' in from the Floyd Boolit Shop a bit ago,

You know there is a helgramite out there in Blue Ridge that's really big. We turned rocks over on creek banks to get.It was big, black, and had a set of pincers on both ends.Made great fish bait.
In West Texas we have a big beetle too.

Must have been attracted by the bright flash of colours coming from your area.
