before i got a make alot of noise with my 308 iv made up some quick rounds with some 2400 to see what happens ( as a have alot of it) i used 4227 in the past a found it worked pritty well but is there anyone who has tryed 2400

the lyman 49 says a 170 lead bullet can have a max of 23 grains

so since im using 168 amax iv got a couple of 26.5 grains to try but iv made some up going from 20 to 23 ish and also a 135 hpbt with 26.5 grains behind it first jsut to keep an eye on the pressures

i also made one with 16 grains so il check to see if it comes out the barrel (mind you 17 grains of 4227 did, be it about 5 foot low at 100 yards, and 2400 seems abit more "potent")

Have shot a lot of 2400 in 308. Have found that between 18-20 grains usually produces best accuracy with blt wts between 150-200. 16 gr. with the 150 grainers is not a bad starting point.

I have been using 2400 in .308. Here is a target shot with powder coated bullets and 18 gr. 2400. As you can see accuracy is nothing to write home about, but I have loaded up some cartridges with 16 and 17 gr. loads of 2400. When I get to shoot them, I will report back with pictures. 16 grs of 2400 gives me good accuracy in my 30-06.

Attached to the top left of the target is a cleaning patch run through the bore after 5 rounds to see if any powder coating was coming off the bullets. So far so good.

right went to the range today and apart from being way to dam hot to shoot in the sun i did try a load of 2400 rounds and i find them pritty good , i started at 16 grain which ... well ... came out the barrel at least and then worked up in half grain upto 26 grains, 26 was abit high but lyman what ever edition said 24 with a cast 170 so i thought i 26 with a amax 165 would be ok ..... and it was .... i didnt notice any height difference at 200 yards compared to the 24 grains so i dont rekon the powder reaction compared with space in the brass comes to the same pressures , so i rekon il stay with 24 grains for the time being as a hot load and then work out a accurate load which some guys rekon 20 grains, but we shall see , i gave the bore a quick looking down as well and its spotless so were ok with the burning

Sooner or later, you will learn that 2400 does not give high grade accuracy at charges over 20 grains. 16 to 18 grain will give you the most job.

There is a reason for the paragraph above, but I don't feel taking the time to go into a detail explanation as to the "why" of it all. If you want to drive a cast bullet must over 1.8 fps, you will get better accuracy out of a medium burning power and leave the fast burners on the shelf for other uses.

They Lyman manual's max loads for this powder in the 308 has nothing to do with accuracy. It is just there to keep you from turning your rifle into a grenade.

but im not shooting cast which is why i tried a slightly increased load , but it made no difference in power so why waste the powder, im using 2400 because its easy to get hold of for me and works well in my .44 , so why have loads of diff powders when i just need 1

Ok.... I assumed you were using cast bullets as this is what this forum all about. I have not bought and fired jacketed bullets in many years, so I am not familiar with all the new names and types. I just missed the substance of your post.

Therefore, I have nothing more to say and you trying to do something with which I have no experience, so I will just shut up.

Times of shortage oblige us to try all sorts of unconventional load approaches. I do wish the component makers would stir from their slumber and get some 9mm and 357 Magnum jacketed bullets into the pipeline. Loaded ammo in those calibers would a nice touch, also.

Also keep in mind that jacketed bullets produce more pressure than cast do in the same load density and powder charge, weight for weight cast produce lower pressures.

I used to use 2400 in my 308 but find that H-335 works better for accuracy and pushing to a bit more speed. My favorite is my group buy 31141 with plain base and hollow point. Started out using a load of 30grs and worked up half grain at a time. I won't mention where I wound up. Rifle and I are still intact.
