I am looking to cast some 308 for a few 3006 and a few others. These will be gas checked but what alloy type should I use? Also what size should the bullet be 309? I was thinking of a 1 lb Linotype to 2 lbs pure lead. I am also looking to cast .314 for a few mosin rifles I have. What size molds? I bore slugged them at .313 for most. Was thinking of using the same alloy mixture as above. Thanks!

I prefer .310 but mostly .311 for .30 cals of .308 - .309 groove diameter. I also use .314 pretty much for most of my MNs except my Sako rebuilt M39 which does fine with .312 sized. I've run into a few MNs that have much larger groove diameters of .316 - .318 but would only chamber a .314 - .315 sized bullet w/o turning the case necks thinner.....those MNs moved out of my hands quickly.........

As to alloy you don't say what loads, velocity level and particular cast bullets you are looking to use. You can start with that alloy but be prepared to up the % of linotype if the bullets are too soft. You might consider water quenching also if you've some experience at casting.

I've got an M24 that's .309". Definitely not normal, but good anyways. Of course, that one has the SIG barrel on it.
