I am wanting a go to powder for my Marlin 336 in 35 Rem. All I have now is brass and dies. My shooting will be mostly target or steel plates. I have seen the 10 gr. of Unique posts and also the Trail Boss posts but not much on 2400. I have also seen the 60% load info about H4895, I would use H4895 for high power loads. I may use 195-200 gr cast with gas checks and I might use some 200 gr Sierra or Remington, don't know yet. 20% of my shooting could be for pigs with 80% at targets. Any ideas? Thanks Jerry

I've been loading the famous 16 grs 2400 with a 1/2 gr fiberfill wad over the powder and the RD

190gr TL boolit for my Marlin 336. Best plinkin load yet for my rifle.

My experience with #2400 is that you cannot get acceptable ballistic uniformity in the .35 Remington and similar "medium bore" larger than .30-30 case capacity, without using a filler. I learned the hard way many years ago, that if a powder requires an inert space filler to reduce excessive velocity variation, then it isn't suited for those conditions of loading and that is a clue to seek elsewhere.

I use mostly cast in my Marlin levergun with the RCBS 35-200FN cast of wheelweights.

My testing shows that #2400 when used without a filler is excessively position sensitive:

RCBS 35-200FN, 16 grs. #2400, Winchester case, WLR, muzzle elevated 1540 fps, 30Sd, 101 ES
same as above, but with butt shaken sideways to level charge in case, no filler 1420 fs, 32 Sd, 116 ES

My "Go To" plinking load is RCBS 35-200FN, 9.0 grs. Bullseye, Winchester case, WLR, 5 rounds elevated, 5 rounds leveled, 1370 fps, 10 Sd, 33ES

74473

Jacketed handloads and factory loads typical velocities:

Hornady 200-gr. JSP, 30.0 grs. RL-7, Winchester case, WLR, 1942 fps, 22 Sd, 54 ES
Hornady 200-gr. JSP, 33.0 grs. RL-7, Winchester case, WLR, 2117 fps, 31 Sd, 87 ES
Hornady 200-gr. JSP, 39 grs. IMR4064, Winchester case, WLR, 1974fps, 28 Sd, ES 72
Federal 200-gr. JSP factory load, 2058fps, 22 Sd, 65 ES
Remington 200-gr. factory load, 2012 fps, 18 Sd, 25 ES
Winchester 200-gr. factory load 1958 fps, 52 Sd, 133 ES

Outpost75--I read your post with interest since I just finished doing some 'sperimenting myself with 2400, the same RCBS 35-200FN boolit, but heat treated to Bhn 27, WLR primer, but in a .358 Winchester chambered in a Browning pre-81 BLR lever action. My charge was 22g, and without any regard to postioning the rifle before shooting and without any filler of any kind, my stats were as follows: ES 10 ave vel 1805 and SD of 3. This was a five shot string. The next 5 read ES 22 ave vel 1796 and SD of 8. This load gave about 1" to maybe 1-1/2 inch groups at 100 yds which I thought was great for a light short barreled rifle with a 4X scope. 23.2g of 2400 with the same boolit did not give as nice a group, but the 10 shot stats were: ES 28 ave vel 1868 and SD of 8.
Now granted, the .358 Winchester has a mite larger case capacity, and maybe therin lies the explanation?

A ha! I just checked over my notes again and found that the first 10 shot string I fired with air cooled 35-200 boolits and 22g of 2400 gave me the following stats: ES 81 ave vel 1835 and an SD of 26. Also the 2 ea five shot groups were much larger. Perhaps if you tried some heat treated boolits your results would resemble mine.

just got a marlin in 35 rem. my wife found at a yard sale 3 weeks ago $200.00 bucks could not open the action. Brit shiny bore. replaced the finger lever plunger.pin & spring.$25.00 bucks works like a new rifle. now I need dies and brass. life is good.GD. My wife just informed me the price she paid for the rifle was $275.00. still a good deal. I'm happy.

PS.do you all think this bullet will work well in the marlin LA 35 Remington? #358009 http://castboolits.gunloads.com/picture.php?albumid=31&pictureid=4141

I just did some experimenting last Saturday. Using the RCBS 35-200FN ~bhn21 and lubed with Carnauba Red, Winchester cases and CCI standard primers, 20.5 grains of 2400 seemed like the sweet spot.

Howdy !

For full-power 200gr bullet loads in .35Rem, I liked Lyman's load data given for IMR3031. Their 205gr cast charge was 1gr less IMR3031 than what was listed for
3031 charge under 200 "J"-word. You may want to take a peak @ their data.

In my M-336 XLR .35Rem, " Trailboss " was too s-l-o-w. 14.5gr of TB completely filled my Rem cases.

For my .35Rem target shooting needs w/ the XLR, I've been getting incredible results using 18.7gr IMR4759 under surplus Rem 150PSPs.

For a lead load, 16.2gr I4759 under " Dead Center Duplex " .35 cal swaged 200SPBTs has shot very well. These I shoot " patched " w/ Dymo label maker tape.
I pulled the swaged 200gr bullets from sabot'ed .45 caliber muzzleloader 12ct scab pack.

For my $$$, IMR 4759 is hard to beat; when top accuracy in .35Rem is sought.

With regards,

I use 17.5gr of 2400 under several boolits in the 190/200gr range. No fillers, never noticed any posistion sensitivity. Why that load? it saves powder. Shoots the bullseye so consistantly it gets boring.

Limited experience at this time, but seems that RCBS 200FN with #4759 is going to be hard to improve on in my Marlin 336 Microgroove. No chrono, targets speak for themselves.

C. E Harris who has used a pile of 2400 in cast loads claims 2400 is not position sensitive I agree with him. It was his articles that cinched the idea to use 2400. I use 2400 exclusively for the 30/30, 30-06, and 45/70 with absolutely no fillers I do not believe in them and I have had great luck. Cases also loaded in the past was 308 and the 7.5 x55 Swiss again with no issues. 2400 is my go to powder for most cast bullet loads in rifle cartridges.

I'm looking for a load for mine. I just bought 100 of what I think to be rcbs 220gr FPGC. shooting it in a 336. Ive shot 158SWC with no gascheck with good results in the past. I bealive I used imr4198 but id have to look back in my records, but I got a really good deal on these an excited to try them out! I have to many powders on hand to list but mostly is imr. any good ideas?
