74421Stopped by local shop on a whim while running some errands. Marlin 1895CB in 45-70 on the consignment rack; a couple places with worn/scratched bluing, several minor scratches on the wood. Ugly aftermarket recoil pad on it, factory sights. Supposedly less than ten rounds through it. Out the door for $525.74420

Aren't all the 1895CB's 45/70?

Wow that is a good buy!! I think they go for $800.00 to $1200.00 on gunbroker and other gun auction sites.

Shoot light loads or keep the recoil pad. 400gr of lead can push back if it is going fast. Got one in 2010 and it is a fun gun to shoot. May go bison hunting so day.

This just chaps my backside, I have been watching for a decent deal on a cb for a while now, and just 10 minutes finally bought a guide gun instead. lol
At least I finally have a 45/70 to go with the dies and some ammo I have been saving for the day one followed me home. lol

Sage advice!! I shoot a 405gr Rem jacketed SP in front of 50gr of 3031 for hunting and the recoil is brutal. Don't have to shoot it more than once though!!

This makes me feel really good in that I gave 350 for mine several years ago. Used but in new shape. You'll love that rifle. They're fun to shoot with 2400 and comfortable or you can woop them up with a handful of 3031 if you like to get smacked around. Enjoy.

My fun loads are recommended minimums of Trail Boss under Lee 405gr and 330gr wheel weights. Ther is a difference in these two loads but both are very easy on your sholder.

Congratulations, that's a great cast boolit launcher at a terrific price. Are you set up for casting .460" boolits yet? I'd have to put a peep sight on it, but your eyes may still shoot factory irons well. Please resist the urge to put wheels and a lanyard on it, as that would ruin the lines.;-)

I have two Ranch Dog molds, plus a guy at my last job casts for Trapdoors, so I'm at a good starting point. Still no brass or dies. I've been sleeping on the couch as a result of this one...

I would recommend the Lyman Gould HP mold this bullet is very accurate and will take game down cleanly and effectively. I shoot mine out of my guide gun at 1550 FPS. Sized and lubed it runs 330 grains and is just joy to shoot.

My Guide Gun loves the RD 350's, resist the urge to crank up the 425's too much if you put a scope on it. Dies and brass will show up someday, just remember to ship them to a work address or a friend if things stay chilly on the domestic front.

Nothing wrong with a Guide Gun! Especially if it's an early one with a muzzle brake. If you try it and disagree just shoot me a PM and I'll reply with disposal instructions.
I dunno, that CB is a pretty sweet looking rifle. Hmmm....

TX gunNut, I got a good chuckle out of that. I doubt I will be disappointed with the guide gun, even though it is the newer one with the lawyer safety(which I don't like).
I was in the market for a guide gun too, but I WANT a CB. lol I will eventually find a decent deal on one, and in the mean time I will have a guide gun to play with. lol

It is probably a good thing I picked up a guide gun first, because if I had found a CB, I would have probably called it good and never got the guide gun too.lol

No, I can tell you for a fact that it is totally possible to buy a CB and a few years later pick up a guide gun and enjoy both. The CB wears a williams FP rear and a lyman globe front. The guide gun is factory stock. Both are equally fun with the CB being much easier to hit with due to sighting plane and better sights. The guide gun isn't quite as much fun with heavy loads.

I can definitely see where having a GG and a CB makes sense. My GG wears a compact VX-3 and the CB would be a hoot with sights similar to Ebner's.

My model 99 wears a scope, but I can't (yet) bring myself to scope my winchesters or marlins. Like I said yet, there may come a day.

My first big bore was a 1895M in 450M, without porting. Wears a Williams FP. Very much a handful. Wish now I had gotten it in 45-70 for the purpose of cartridge commonality.

Lucky Dog sniffing that one out. As far as its recoil pad. Take it someplace decent and have a nice one re-installed. As far as sleeping on the couch. You need to buy your next large purchase in behalf of her. "Its the thought that counts."

I used that exact bullet in the first Marlin 1895CB I bought pushed with 31.5 grains of SR4759 it worked very well on a big fat 6 pointer I shot at 21 yards !

I also found the 1895CB with stoutly loaded (H322) Ranch Dog 460-350GC and 460-425GC the recoil could get a bit noticable with that hard rubber buttplate .

What dies do you recommend? I see some bad reviews for Lee in 45-70 for whatever reason. I already have a set of 450 Marlin dies (Hornady), so I could just get a sizer die and call it good, correct?

Also, is the Hornady expander die the same as a Lyman M die? Do I need a crimp die (which one) or is roll crimping sufficient?

I used plain old RCBS dies and they worked fine . Now if I were going to get a set I'd opt for RCBS Cowboy dies or a set of Redding dies .

+1 for those cowboy dies of RCBS as 6pt-sika commented on. Very nice die set for anyone wanting to use poured cast in their rifle.

I have had great performance with the Lyman HP Gould mold. Running it around 1400 FPS.

The Standard RCBS 45-70 die set is fine. But I think the RCBS Cowboy Die set is only $5.OO more. Size the Boolits at .460 and go to town. For Higher end loads I do not think you can beat H-322. But in that rifle with no real recoil pad I would not wish to push Boolits that hard or they will HURT lol.

I have the Stainless Guide Gun and use the now gone Ranch Dog 350Gr RNFP/GC with 52Gr of H-322 in a Rem case with a Fed LRP and it will group at 3/4 " and less at 100 yards with a scope. But I will warn you that even in a GG with a good recoil pad it will rattle your brains at the bench lol. As they are moving probably just a shy north of 1900 FPS.

If you wish to use a J-Bullet the Hornady RN 350Gr shoots grand with 53Gr of H-322 in a Rem Case and a Fed LRP. Again under 3/4" of an inch. :)

I have used the Ranch Dog 425Gr RNFP/GC but for what I do I did not feel I needed anything that heavy or the recoil associated with it lol.

Oh did I mention I am jealous lol. :)

Been looking at the cowboy dies; so if I read right, the larger expander plug does the same thing as a Lyman M die? And the FCD is only needed for Js?

So for starting out, only shooting cast, a set of cowboy dies should do it all? And could I use the expander die with 450 Marlin?

The Cowboy dies will have an expander die included .

So the kitchen floor is getting redone today. Managed to get brass and dies without having to sleep on the couch. Best part is I can work at the reloading bench a little while they are working on the floor!

I use the Lyman set which came with the "M" die. Have been quite satisfied.

I found a 1895 CB a few months ago at the LGS and it had regular RCBS dies (I already had the Cowboy set), 2 boxes of Leverlutions and 2 boxes of reloaded Winchesters with it. Prior owner had added a nice Pachmier recoil pad and sling to it. Stole it at $475.
Prior owner per sales guy said he bought it for a Buffalo hunt and decided to sell it after he went on the hunt and killed his Bison.

It is a great addition to my 1895GS and my 444XLR with a SBL lever on it.

I have the Ranch Dog Molds and need to cast and load some up for this beauty.

Hope you enjoy yours as much as I'm going to enjoy this one.
