hello, i am casting 170 gr. #31141 fn with gas check sizing at .310" for my 30/30, lyman cast bullet handbook says that the load of 7.5 gr. of 700x has a velocity 1269 fps.
my questions are #1..., is this enough velocity for deer hunting under 100 yds? #2.... 7.5gn. is the max load, would it be dangerous to push that max .5 gn or so in .1 gn increments?
will it bump the preasure too much? or should i go with a slower burn powder? i have a surplus of 700x and would like to use it up.

IMO no it is not adequate for deer. Will it kill a deer, yes, but also a .22 will. Go with a slower powder and get the speed up.

I agree about getting the speed up a bit. After some terminal ballistics tests I run some time ago and experience with muzzleloaders, 1000 fps is about the minimum you will need at point of impact for average size deer (live weight 150# or less). That assumes you are using a soft alloy that will deploy energy properly in impact. My 30/30 got 17"+ of penetration at forty yards using a 160 gr rngc boolit at an MV of 1550 fps.

No experience with the 30/30, however I have taken two deer with a 32 win. spec using a 180 gr flat nose boolit. The picture in my avatar is one of the bucks. I believe the load was 8.5g of Red Dot. Both shots were in one side and out the other. They both dropped inside 100 yds. Not the hottest load by any stretch but they both died quickly. I come from a long bow hunting background so blood trailling is almost second nature. If you tracking skills are not great, use a heavier load and a soft allot to get good expansion.

I agree, a hotter load and not too hard an alloy, for hunting....it will also help flatten out the trajectory.

Brian Pearce in June 2008 Handloader article wrote " 27.5 grains of Alliant Reloader #7 with 170 grain cast FN w/gas check, clocked 2,300 fps out of his 20 inch barrel 94 Winchester, shoots flatter than factory 150 gr. ammo and has accounted for a number of mule deer ". I don't believe you need 2,300 fps ,but I would recommend geting a slower powder and go for around 1,800 to 2,000 fps with a boolit cast of 50 / 50 wheel weights and soft lead like range lead. You want to hit em a fairly hard blow and get boolit to mushroom some. 700x is just too fast, but if can get within 50 or 60 yards and drive it into the vitals 1200 will kill deer. My grandpaw hunted and killed hogs with a 22 LR, but he got up close when they was feeding and put the bullet in the brain thru the ear hole. One shot kills every time I was with him. Back then he baited them with corn , but they was hogs he bought and released on his property so there was never any trouble from game warden. Good luck.

For comparison's sake, that 30/30 load is similar to a .357mag out of a revolver, except with less frontal area. It'd do the job, up close...maybe 50yds or so. Shot placement would be critical.

I've used RN and FN bullets to take deer. The FN's generally penetrate LESS than same weight/speed RN's. I agree with most of the others here, go faster! My loads generally go 1800 to 2100 fps at the muzzle. Under go yards you MIGHT be all right with your load.sr4759,imr3031 or 748 would be better powders in MY opinion. Work up an ACCURATE load around 1800 to 2000 fps and go hunting!

There's a good reason that load is listed as max even though the pressure shown for a max load may be lower than for another powder. The pressure will start to spike sharply much above that. Sometimes increasing the charge above max can even yield a lower velocity - but the pressure will be spiking.

In my opinion NO to a 30 cal at 1250 or so! It would kill deer with proper shot placement, and at close range, but I question the potential of a clean kill at 100 with it.
Your bullet in a 30-30 is capable of near factory vols and I would recommend that you load it to those levels with an appropriate powder such as 3031 or 4895. Use your 700 loads for offhand practice at 50 yds. Be very careful of those 700 loads as double charges are very possible, and the potential results accordingly very dangerous. Good luck.

I shoot that very same boolit out of my 30/30 sears lever gun with 3031 powder and it holds some awesome groups at 100 yards

Lyman #311041 is the CLASSIC 30-30 WCF cast boolit. You could not have chosen a better design for the caliber. I would like more velocity as well, at least 1600 FPS along with soft alloy composition OR the boolit cast as a BruceB Softpoint. That process is stickied here somewhere, and though it is slow to produce boolits......your don't need zillions of soft points, and in several designs I've tried the BBSFs shoot to the same points of impact as the homogenous alloy castings of the same design fired with the same load characteristics.
