Hi all,
Anyone familiar with this town? Looks to be about 15 miles southwest of Syracuse, 6 or 7 miles east of Auburn on Rt 20, according to mapquest. A clue on how to pronounce it would help for starters.

A "down the road" job prospect for a several year project came by me today. I don't want to pursue it, (or lead anyone on), if I'd hate the place. On the Web it looks like a pretty high end little town. I'm wondering the normal things, like: Is there a local place to shoot without paying $$$$ to join a trap and skeet club? Are there public lands to hunt on nearby? How rural does the area "feel"? Do any normal folk still live and work there, or have they been property taxed out? Stuff like that.

Nice place. It is the beginning of wine country though.
The pronunciation around here is "Skinny atlas"
There is a club about 15 miles away.Otisco club 100 yard range and separate skeet range. I know a board member there. If you want more info, let me know.

You would need to ask a local about hunting etc. (The before mentioned board member)

It's a real nice town. Lee has it right, it's pronounced, Skin-ee-atlas

it's an "upscale" small town surrounded by finger lakes bed and breakfasts. The fishing is great, Syracuse and Rochester are nearby and other than Skaneateles proper, it's pretty rural. Lot's of farms and hunting opportunities around, not the least of which is Montezuma Wildlife Refuge. Some very nice bucks come out of there.

Low crime but typical NY taxes.

Okay, you guys win the fone-et-ick speelin kontist. I knew I butchered it, my memory failed me again. Lets see ya pronounce Pyrites (Pi-rit-tees) or Madrid (MAD-rid) or Pitcairn (Pit-krin) or Theresa (Thuh-ree-suh). I'll really stump ya- Gouverneur. Take yer best guess, you'll butcher it!

My father was born in Pitcairn, PA and always pronounced it Pit-care-in. (Accent on second syllable, the three syllables pronounced like the common short words.)

It that's the Madrid in MO, where they had the huge earthquake a couple of hundred years ago, it's Mad-rid. (Accent on first syllable, both syllables pronounced like the common short words.)

No clue on Pyrites, but I'll bet it's sneaky too. Probably not pronounced Pie-rights.

GOV- uh- nuer emphasis on the gov. last syllable sounds like ma-nure.

BTW, I was up at the end of last month but couldn't contact you for a cup of Joe. Instead of vacation I wound up going to a funeral.

Try Charlotte.

RE: the pronunciation of Skaneateles, as a resident of almost 20 years I believe I can speak with authority

im from camillus, 2 towns over. Skinnyatlas is a great and beautiful town. Bit pricey though. when i was a young teen i installed docks for people there. the wine is great and reasonable from a lot of the shops, and all in all its a nice place to just walk around. Couldn't tell you about the shooting there. I know the HS is well respected though. Very good academically for a public school, even by upstate standards.

I have some pictures of the lake if you want to get a feel for it. Let me know and i'll email them to you. i don't want to waste bandwith though if i can help it.

Thank goodness! The whole economy was near collapse 'cuz the welfare mutts ain't got health care insurance. If you move in we'll be able to give them the insurance they want, it's that special health care insurance that includes beer, smokes and porn. Thank you!

Comon' Bob! I'm surprised at you. I mean, look at all she's done for NY and the North Country especially. Fer instance, what about the time she......................, well, didn't she.............., uh, but she did take care of.................., but.................. Oh man. My dream is shattered. I may have to lower her from Goddess status to carpet bagging, scum sucking, power hungry, socialist, facist dictatoress.

Don't worry, any property taxes I might pay would be as a raindrop into the atlantic. The property taxes of our clients... now that's an entirely different reality. I will never be able to afford to own one of the houses that I build. And I've been paying for health insurance out of my own pocket all of my life, at least for as long as I could afford it. Now that I'm old enough that I may actually need health care, they are pricing it beyond my reach. I've paid both shares of my social security, and my wife's, for most of my life as well. I wonder if I'll ever see any of it back? To get back onto the "off topic"; I noticed many pics of pheasants on the local gun club site. Are there still wild ringnecks to be hunted? Or, are they "put and take" birds? Looks like my dog will love it there. She's been mad at me for moving to the low country, and she's starting to point squirrels and stuff which is worrisome.

I was reading the Rip-off Report a while ago and found quite a few post about Tupper Lake. Is skinny atlas near Tupper Lake? [smilie=1:

Bret4207

Tupper is in the north-central Adirondacks, just over the hill from Lake Placid. Skinny-atlas is down in the flatlands near Syracuse. What is the Rip Off Report and what were they saying?

Buncha crap. Tuppers got some darn fine folks living there. Sounds like the typical welfare mutt mentality.
