I finally got my chrony stand done. Rather than tie up band width with a lot of photos, I set up a page for it on my site.

A CHRONOGRAPH STAND (http://floydpics.wordpress.com/a-chronograph-stand/)

hello to all! congratulations for your base for the crony! I place it on a barrel, but I wanted to say that if you want you can not use two rods upper plastic.they serve only when there is too much sun ......... I do not use them so you do not risk to shoot them.

:Fire:

Nice, where did you get the thick plexiglass. I built a box with two layers of 1/8" lexan separated by about 1/2" it has stopped sabots and gas checks.....

Jim, that's a beautiful stand, but it just doesn't look redneck enough to do you justice !

The plexiglas is so you can spray plastic shrapnel through the unit?

Looks good i like the tire idea plenty of weight to keep it in place.

My first thought when I saw the setup was, "sure hope he doesn't need to move it, that sucker looks heavy" then looked at who had posted this. Remembered the new "shaded shooting bench" he recently posted and am startin to think maybe Jim is gettin a little soft on us. Even the doggone grass, weeds and rocks look organized!

Let us know what the largest boolit that Lexan can withstand.

Make that base a bit rounder on the bottom and it will just bob out of the way if hit.

Well done Jim.

Nice job Jim.
Good ideas for when I invest in a Chrony..

When I first got the chrony, I thought about getting a short section of 6"X6"X3/8" angle and attaching it to the stand with the back of the angle up (^). I figured a hit would deflect upward. Onliest down side of that is I wouldn't be able to read the screen without getting up and going to it.

The arrival of the Lexan shield allows me to read the screen. While there is a backing strip to reinforce the screws holding the shield to the base, I have no idea of knowing what amount of energy it will resist.

I'm sure it will stop an errant check and fairly sure it will stop a cast boolit at medium velocity. I have my doubts, though, that it would stop a .30 caliber 'book' load with nothing more than two screws holding it down.

Nicely done. I like the clear screen shield.

I was about to set up this morning to shoot over my new chrony. It clouded up, got dark and the wind picked up. That turned on a light for me. If I got caught in a sudden thunder shower, I'd be scrambling around trying to get up the chrony and everything else.

So, I built a sun screen that doubles as a rain cover. I certainly wouldn't leave the chrony in the stand while it's raining, but the cover will protect it long enough for me to get it up before it gets wet.

The cover is built of 1/4" plexiglass that I fogged with an orbital sander.

Now that's ingenuity beyond "Redneck" style. I like your work my fellow Virginian.

Looks good Jim. If it was me, I'd put some type of steel on the leading edge of the plywood. I know I could put a round between the plexiglass and the plywood and mess the whole thing up!

It has been some years since a guy brought some of that to the club i think it was thicker it stopped a 38 wad cutter and a 38 +P but shrapnel did exit the off side a 50 caliber round ball with 80 grs FFG went right though as did a 12 gauge slug. We spent a lot of time cleaning up the mess after a few shots it came from a bank and i am not sure it was there to protect the people but to keep the bad guy from the cash!
