Wow, no one specifically mentioned "the ten comandments"
while it's not necessarily my favorite, it's definately thee movie that fits into, "Movies You Can't Keep From Watching!!!"

American graffitti was mentioned, NOW, a recent movie with similar story line, except for those that were in high school during the early 1980s...is "Skateland" I love that movie !

Another not mentioned that's high on my list is "Idiocracy"...recommended by Rush Limbaugh many times...made in 2006 staring Luke Wilson, the premise is: an extremely dumbed down American 500 years in the future.

And I no mention of "No country, for old Men" or "shutter Island" or "sixth sense" ALL GREAT !

Some recent great ones from 2012 include:
"Lincoln"
"Memorial Day"
"Take Shelter"...don't watch this one if you're a little obsessive-compulsive.

I could go on.

Just about anything that John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Lee Marvin, Sam Elliot, Slim Pickens, Clint Walker, Charlton Heston, Sean Connery, Jimmy Stewart, or Walter Brennan acted in.

Most of the films that Burt Lancaster, Cary Grant, Gary Cooper, Glenn Ford, Natalie Wood, Doris Day, Henry Fonda, Yul Brenner, Bogart & Bacall, Robert Redford and Tom Selleck acted in.

Some favorites:

El Dorado
In Harm's Way
Strategic Air Command
Paint Your Wagon
Winchester '73
Vera Cruz
The Magnificent Seven
The Big Country
Sergeant York
Centennial (TV mini-series)

Anything written by Louis L'Amour.

Yes, too many to list. Most of the ones I like to watch have already been listed but My Oh MY was really surprised to see one of my favorites, October Sky, posted!

My tastes are somewhat diverse and wacky I guess in that I can watch Quigley- completely enjoy it, then turn around and watch the Lord of the Rings trilogy and really enjoy that. Then put in Space Cowboys watch it for the umpteenth time. Then the next night watch Tombstone. Then the next night watch Star Wars Episode One. Then Hunt for Red October followed by Robin Hood (Crowe and Blanchett) and on and on. :) :veryconfu .... seems to get worse during the winter

Back when I had time to watch movies that is.
Anyway, yeah I love that movie.

Another one that I should have put on the list is The Princess Bride.

Oh she also told me to put Down Periscope on the list. It has been family tradition to watch that movie on Christmas day every year. I don't know why LOL!

Wow, no one specifically mentioned "the ten comandments"-JonB

More than a few years back I had the pleasure of being invited to a small dinner in Jackson, MS at the National Police Revolver Championships. Charlton Heston was the "surprise" speaker, he was NRA president at the time. He recited a speech, based mostly on the book of Exodus, that was largely left out on the movie. No, he didn't use any notes. And yes, the room was silent except for one voice.

scottiemom,
I was fortunate enough to meet and speak with Gene Kelly back in about 1983. We were refurbishing a chandelier and some fireplace andirons that came from his house that had burned to the ground. He was about 71 at that time and was starting to slow down a bit. He told me that he was very happy that we were able to restore his chandelier to its original beauty. However, the one thing that could not be replaced was his collection of shoes that the fire had taken. He had saved and collected every pair of shoes that he had ever worn in every movie he had ever danced in.
Another thing of note; when a reporter once asked him if he believed that he might be the greatest dancer to perform in front of a camera, Kelly replied, "Not as long as Fred Astaire is alive."

TxGunNut,
You were very lucky to have had the chance to see Heston in the flesh and hear his thoughts and opinions from his own mouth.
He is one of those people that I feel a little cheated that I did not have the good fortune to meet in person; John Wayne and Charles Marion Russell are two others.

Mr. Blandings Builds His dream House is still relevant today, great movie. Watch anybody have a house built, same basic experiences.

I love Myrna Loy explaining to the painter what colors she wants the house painted. Great comedy.

Animal House. I knew all of those characters when I was in college in the late 60s! I went to a small southern college as portrayed by Faver, in a small town where the college was the focus of society and business. Got harassed by the overly-enthusiastic ROTC cadet officers, knew the cool frat guys. There was a professional student like D-day who never seemed to do much more than hang around the student union. My roommate and best friend to this day even bore a striking resemblance to Flounder in his ROTC uniform.

I didn't read all the posts, so this may be a repeat - but "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" series, and even better, the full "Millenium" series from Swedish TV (saw it on Direct TV a couple weeks ago) from which the "Girl..." movies were cut are flamin' outstanding. If you haven't seen them, you've missed something. And the books are better! Page turners - the author, Stieg Larsen, handed the manuscript to his publisher, went home, had to climb stairs to get to his appt, and had a heart attack and died - so we won't get any more from Stieg. Check it out...

Then there are:
Robin Hood w/Errol Flynn
McClintock
Singing In The Rain

OK, my second post on this.
ya know, I like most any movie that tells a story....a good story.
Many times the low budget Indie movies are just that, a good story,
I guess that's why I like them so much.
AND the reason for this second post is I just remembered another great one.
"The Straight story"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0166896/
It's actually several GREAT stories wrapped up into one movie, based on a real event.

"The Straight Story" chronicles a trip made by 73-year-old Alvin Straight from Laurens, Iowa, to Mt. Zion, Wis., in 1994 while riding a lawn mower. The man undertook his strange journey to mend his relationship with his ill, estranged, 75-year-old brother Lyle.

El Dorado with John Wayne and Robert Mitchum (the one with James Caan not Ricky Nelson) was on last night.

It makes my list every time it's on.

I don't understand the fascination with John Wayne... one of the worst actors ever.

Actors don't get any points for walking on the set and "acting" like themselves. They win my respect when I don't recognize them, or when they portray a character who is nothing like they are.

I didn't say he wasn't a good actor. I said he was one of the worst actors ever. Right up there with James T. Kirk.

He personified everything that was wrong with the studio system.

The most significant thing I ever saw him do was look out over the China Sea into a setting sun.

From Vietnam.

Of course, you'd have to think about that...

Hi,
Well...either you get it or you don't! John Wayne was a good enough actor when there were REAL actors unlike today! More than that he was an icon and more importantly he was a role model! If I had to chose who was going to be a role model for my kid,uh John Wayne or some tattoed, black, half drag queen, basketball player, tough choice!

Hi 44,
Thanks,I actually thought TROLL,but worse than that, is some of these people really believe this stuff they put out! The vids were nice and of course the young man in the McClintock excerpt was Patrick Wayne his son! John Wayne was married 3 times and all his wives were Latin/Spanish women! Some guys never learn, huh!:D

Here's a pic of Waynes children grown up. Patrick and Tony (daughter) played a small part as kids in "The Quite Man"!

Jammersix,

Sure would appreciate it if you would elucidate as to how an actor could be the personification of a business model employed by the major entertainment corporations that became known as the "studio system".

On a somewhat more logical note... I can't believe that we've overlooked one of the all time best western motion pictures of all time.
