Well, last trip to the scrapyard yielded what seems to be a full bin (about 5x5x5) of hard alloy, already cast into Lyman and SAECO ingots. It's not pure Pb, but will scratch with a key, so it's not Lino. Maybe someone's WW stash?

The scrapyard would sell it to me for 60 cents/lb., said the price of lead was going up—again. That was a little rich for my blood, even if it was already ingnotized. I was really hoping to find a Ruger #3 action...

When i "GO" i don't want my stash destin for china, it's part of me and i want my stash all over this country in many different ranges. That is one big stash. Hay i haven't heard from "BigSlick" in a few days he didn't leave us for the pearly gates did he? If it was him and his stash that was only a small portion of his stash, tell his family to start digging in the yard.

I think BigSlick is in Texas but if he can get the co-ordinates of that pile of tamed ingots he might be on the way west as we speak! :)

I'll give the coordinates to anyone who'll PM me. I don't want to be selfish about raw materials.

if it's in the San Diego area, I'm interested.

I guess I should've just given the info to start with:

Nice guys, most seem to speak enough english to tell you when a forklift is headed for you. Take in a 12-pack of Diet Coke once in a while and you win friends. Parking is a bear as there is a lot of truck traffic with recyclers/scroungers bringing in their stuff.

Wonder if they are making more lead-based paint for Mattel out of it?

that's what lead goes for in my parts. 60cents/pound is that a bad price?
Where can I find it cheaper? most scrap yards here are selling lead at 75cents/pound!

..............That isn't a bad price for lead, especially if it's in ingots already. Last ingot-ized lead I bought from a guy at the range was .45/lb, and that was awile ago and he wasn't a scrap yard :-) Last I paid for linotype was .75/lb and wished I could have bought all that he had.

The worst we get dinged at the most expensive scrap retailer is 25C a pound. 60's a bit rude

All depends where you live. Some scrap yards won't pay a nickle for lead too exspensive to haul. Some think it's Gold. I just lucky to have a scrap yard that will sell me all they get in for .20/lb it cost them too much to haul and sell to the main yard. Heck they deal in Aluminum cans all day long and make money cheaper to haul for the buck. If i needed lead and was not a cheap a** as i am, i would pay 60/lb thats still cheap bullets.

I wish I was closer. Last spring we were in ID and stopped at the Sportsman's Warehouse in Boise. They wanted $1 each for Lyman Ingots of lead[smilie=1:, So .60 seems a bit better.

In my opinion if you factor in the time energy and filth associated with smelting down wws that aint a bad deal.

As someone who both casts and is involved in the metals markets I've been keenly aware of the rising price of lead. However, just when it looked as though we casters might get some relief, lead prices are on the run once again.

Upon reflection, maybe it's not too bad a price. As Lloyd says, somebody else had most of the bad smells. And judging by the amount of oxide on the ingots, they may have been cast before zinc wheelweights were invented...

I remember seeing ingoted LY#2 for $1 a lb in the early 80's and laughing. It's only hoarding if you can get it, if you can't it's called rationing. Gianni
