View Full Version : Hmm, a .358 170gr boolit?

I think it's kinda neat, but what Lee mold number is this one? I got this from the ever-outstanding nvbirdman, a very nice Lee double cavity mold for a SWC, but weighs out at roughly 170 grains, lubed and sized, cast from WW lead. Standard 158gr load data should be fine, correct? Or is it normal for a mold to cast slightly differant weight than advertised? Still green as grass, wet behind the ears, can count my casting runs on finger. Really like this boolit, the mold casts perfectly.

That looks like Lee's discontiinued 166 gr SWC. I would start using data for the 358429 170 gr keith. Gianni.

Ummm, where can I find that data? I have Accurate #2, #7, and IMR 700X powders. Can't stand that 700x, impossible to meter.

Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook has loads for the 358429. Also, look at accuratepowder.com for loads with cast boolits and those powders.

I don't think it would be a good idea to use 358429 data with that bullet. The only thing on the two bullets that is similar is the flat on the nose and on the base.

Most of the Lee bullet is designed to be in the case, with very little driving band and nose out of the case. Couple that with the absence of lube space and I think it should be a lower velocity bullet than a 358429.

...............On occasion on Lee's "Surplus Page" you will find an odd boolit mould. Whether prototypes or over runs of custom moulds I don't know and never asked. Maybe 4 years ago I bought a 6 cavity from them for a 240gr SWC .410" design. I wasn't cataloged. I bought it to see if I could use it in my Pedersoli RB repo in 40-65 as a very light plinker boolit.
