I bought a used 450 at the park and swap a couple of weeks ago got a really good deal I think $20.00. The shaft was bent and the whole thing was really kruddy It cleaned up nicely. I ordered a new pressure screw assembly and got it yesterday. In the parts assembly on the shaft there is a nylon bushing, my question is what function does it have? I called Lyman and the service department said I don't need to use it. I am wounder though does it help in any way to use it?

On the shaft above the piston? What is the diameter of this bushing? None of mine have this. All that is in mine is the piston with two O rings on it.

The first result here is a .pdf for the manual which includes a parts schematic. It shows exactly what mine has ... two O-rings. I'd say the "spacer" is some kind of packaging stabilizer ring or similar to prevent parts loss.

The bushing is about 5/8" in diameter and about 1" long and located under the pressure washer. The hole in the center is a couple of thousands larger than the threaded shaft so it slides up and down with little drag. It was packed in a loose plastic bag inside a shipping envelope so I don't think it was for stablizing. I will probably end up not using it as it takes up a little space in the lube reservoir.

Well dah! I found it on the Lyman web site. It is called a Nylon piston stop coller. It is shown being used on the 4500 but not the 450. I think it is to prevent over tightening the pressure washer when the luber runs out of lube. I probably "will" use it as a safety measure.

Wish I could find a Lyman 450 for 20 bucks....

The parts diagram for the 4500 shows that as the piston stop collar. It is not shown on the parts diagram for the 450. I serves to prevent the piston from coming off the threaded portion of the pressure screw. Perhaps someone can post pictures showing the difference between the 450 and the 4500 in this regard.

They are out there; I got a gray one at a gun show for $20.00, missing the lube piston. I also bought one of the orange ones that had the handle upgrade and heater at an estate auction for $7.50.

I think the key is that no one else knows what it is.

That is an excellent little part as it prevents the pistol from coming off the pressure screw . Without it it can be almost impossible to get the pistol out of the machine.

This thing really looked nasty on the guys table. It had some real hard old black lube in it. It took me several hours to get it cleaned up. I used boiling water and a propane torch and a crooked point awl to get the lube out. I looks really nice now. Yea I would buy a truck load of them if I could get them for $20 bucks, just my lucky day. I am giving it to one of my grand sons he has just started in casting and reloading. I'm also giving him a RL-550 Dillion. He has a single stage setup already.

I know this is an older thread , but...how do you guys get that spacer out when you add lube? Do y'all wait until it's out completely or what. I just added new lube to mine and had to drive the piston rod out to access it. I know there has to be an easier way, (even for me). :)

I thought I got a deal when I got a new in the box 450 for $40.00 two years ago at a small gun show. I don't think it had ever been used. Still hasn't but now I have a spare.

I got a 450 last month off eBay for $71. It came in the original box, looked unused, ind when I opened it up it had a stick of lube inside the reservoir that was still its original diameter. Unused.

Bargains are still out there.

I just got one as well and don't understand why you had to drive out the piston rod. If you take a look at the parts diagram, I take off the reservoir cover, completely unthread the pressure nut, drop lube with a hole in the middle in, and screw the pressure nut back down. If the pressure nut spins, I have heard cooling it off helps keep it from spinning.

Deals are still out there. I wanted one to try something other than tumble and dip(messy) lubes, and one popped up for less than $60 shipped. Probably because it had no picture. Showed up with no die retaining nut, but it did have a RN top punch that works with several of my molds.

I have a gray 450 with a brass pressure nut and without o-ring. How old is it?
Thanks.

My thought would be to not worry about taking it out. If it comes up with the pressure washer just push it back down to the bottom and then put the lube down on top of it.

luis7: I have never seen one with a brass pressure nut and especially with out O-rings. Does it have the O-ring groves? If not I am woundering if it is a home made item.

Johnny,

I have a couple of the 45 lubersizers with the brass pressure nut. I have an old grey 450 that has the pressure nut with the two O rings. It may be that the 450 referred to has a pressure nut from a 45 lubersizer. I think the brass pressure nut was original with the 45. Not sure what time frame they would date to.

The brass pressure nut does not have any grooves for O rings. It consists of a steel plug that has a brass skirt that does the same work as the O ring type. The brass skirt does leak a bit but actually works pretty well, though not as good as the O ring type.

Hi Jim! Thats a new one on me. Maybe I haven't seen as many as I thought I had. As long as you don't pinch the O-rings they work great. I found out a long time ago that a little grease on the O-rings goes a long way when you first install the pressure nut.

I have a No. 1 with the brass ring on the pressure nut.

Thanks for putting up the manual. My new to me 450 is grey and has the brass pressure nut. I love gear with some age. My drill press for example is near 100. I just cleaned mine and am eager to try it out. I know this is an old-ish thread but does any one know off hand the size of the o ring at the bottom?

Wouldnt ya know I pouted about a 20 dollar 450 and just got one for free? It even had a sizing die in it! The guy said he tried to use cast in his 9mm... I got it home and saw he had a 355 die in it, Oh well happy me!!!

I read somewhere on here about the spacer you are talking about. So I went to the can that holds my throw away brass an cut a spacer about a half inch long, put it into my RCBS to avoid the problems associated with that thread. I had just started using that sizer an was looking at posts for some answers. Found what I needed an this also.

Good idea Ghost, I think I will be doing that with mine.
