Last Saturday morning around 3:00 AM a police officer from my adopted hometown was ambushed on his way home from his shift. He stopped on an exit ramp to remove some brush from the road and was shot 3 times with a 12ga. I use the ramp every day on my way to work and it is a deep cut through solid rock. The spot for the ambush was at a point that it was not visible from either the expressway or the crossing road. The bluff was 15 ft or so high with bushes on the top. The officer was shot twice in the torso and once in the head from what I heard. He had a vest on but that was of little help. He was found with his side arm still in the holster. This was the first officer in 150 years of the Bardstown Police Dept to die in the line of duty.
Officer Ellis went to school with my shooting buddy's oldest daughter and went to college on a baseball scholarship and played for one of the Cincinnati Reds farm teams. One of his son's had Downs Syndrome and he gave up that career so he could be home to help his wife with that child. He also coached the Little League baseball teams in his neighborhood. I didn't know the officer personally but from what I have heard from other folks that did he was the perfect citizen outside of his job.
There is currently a $100,000 reward for the perpetrator of this heinous murder, raised in the community. Bardstown is a relatively small community with 12,000 residents and probably not over 10 or 12 square miles land wise. It is a typical small farm community and this sort of crime is almost unheard of here.

Holy schnikes. That is awful. Clearly premeditated. Makes you wonder what happened to get that brought down upon someone.

Sounds like the perp knew where and when he would be there, and set a trap. Someone will know who had a beef with him, that is unstable enough to do this. I believe he will be caught.

God rest his soul.

Could be a gang initiation. Watch for "tagging" and other grafitti. Even small towns have gang activty, meth labs, grow houses and fields etc.

This particular expressway is very lightly traveled even during the day. Night time it is almost deserted. I think that whoever did this spent some time figuring this out. Graffiti is almost non existent around here, but if there is anything I'm sure the local constabulary will pick up on it. There are some seriously PO police officers.
The officer was a K-9 handler so I think that it was drug related but that is just my opinion. The state police as well as the local police are saying that they have nothing yet. Personally I think that may be a ploy to keep them from running till they get there ducks lined up. The rumor mill has all sorts of things put forth. If that info is getting to me I'm sure the police also have that information. The citizenry are outraged at this murder and I doubt that there is anyone that will protect this person if they know anything.
I stopped to pick up some farm equipment parts yesterday and the funeral procession went right past the dealer. He said that it took 2+ hours for all to pass by. The road to the cemetery (some 15 miles) was lined with US Flags. In the 40+ years that I have lived here I have never seen anything like it.

It takes a low SOB to kill a man from an ambush! Hopefully he/they will be found quickly. My prayers go out to his family. They are the ones who will suffer now. And I'm sure his loss will be felt in the community.

There's a pill that'll cure that. Won't bring back the lawman who lost his life but one little pill will cure the perp of the sickness that plagues him. They come in many forms; I fancy the ones that come from a Lyman 311413 myself.

Bob, we had a murder localy I was a part of working and we had almost nothing. Several months later, after a few refreshing beverages an idiot started bragging about it. It goes to trial later this year.He gave it all to us.
Rule # 1, mouth shut, ears open, not because LE's are smart but perps are stupid.
The funeral looked impressive on the Evansville TV station.

Happened here two years ago. Deputy pulled up to a stop light at an intersection, car pulled up beside him and hosed him with a semi-auto in .223. He never knew what hit him.

I hope with all my heart that whoever finds him first gives him three rounds in the back, which is more than he deserves.

May the Good Lord bless and guide his family, and we all remember what he gave in protection of his community. It sickens me what people will do to their fellow man.

It sounds like a gang initiation, what a sad and tragic situation.
We are at war there is no doubt, a war to the death not just of our lives but of our souls.
When a man like this is murdered so foully it makes my heart start to grow cold and I want to do evil back.
Is it possible to fight this kind of evil without becoming savages ourselves?
I like to think so, and perhaps could remain dispassionate and fight and kill with regret when the victims of these kinds of attacks are your family members and not mine . I don't know if I am strong enough to keep from becoming savage if it were one of my own.
I guess what I am trying to say is that relieving this kind of vermin from their painful existence would be easy as knocking a bad dog down.
Hating having to do it, rather than becoming as hate filled as they would be our real battle.

Well said 300...one of several reasons I've settled onto they are guilty beyond a reasonable doubt..torture them, then kill them. Had a few things happen in my family and on inlaws side that finally brought me to this way of thinking.
When bad things happen in a persons family, after once or twice it becomes to where you just get the cold stone heart, especially when the d*mn vermin walks free after a few years in prison.

Maybe a gang initiation ..... maybe someone had it out for him for an arrest from the past ... maybe just a creep wanting to shoot a cop. I hope the family can find solace in friends and those close to them. Something like this makes no sense. Such sad times we live in that people have so little respect for each other. When I go out ..... I consider everything outside my door the same as a war zone, with unknown assailants waiting at an unknown time to attack me or members of my family. Maybe tomorrow ... maybe next year. Lots of evil people in the world and they are everywhere. It's a shame our system can't just hang all the bad ones at sun up.

Just last month my next door neighbor Tammy King was shot and killed by her husband for some unknown senseless reason. She was a good neighbor and good around horses, animals and kind and pleasant to everyone she came in contact with. Times are getting tougher .... we must all be watchful.

Unfortunately, a fitting punishment for the jackwagon scum that ambushed this officer would be considered cruel & unusual by the liberals. With any luck, he will resist arrest just enough to be shot with a full magazine by each officer attempting to arrest him. Filth like that doesn't deserve to breathe the same air decent folks do, but that's just my opinion.

I'm about 60 miles west of Bardstown. Close by is Loretto. Back in the day this was the home of the "cornbread mafia". Not much has changed as there is alot going on there with drugs - mainly weed. Lots of crooked small time small town cops in that area that are part of the whole thing. The law never got all of the cornbread mafia infrastructure and it still does it's thing with a low profile. If I were to guess I'd say this LEO busted someone in the high end food chain and this was paybacks... or he was part of something that considered him non sequitor. From my POV there is no way to know one way or the other , but knowing people I work with that were born and raised and live in those areas it can get ugly fast in that good old boy network.

The reward is now up to $150,000. I think someone will roll on this dude for that kind of money. And the money is still coming in.
I don't think this was a random thing and the cop happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. This officer was hell on drugs from what I heard and I'd bet that this was revenge. The local citizens are really pissed about this and eventually something will come up.
One of my customers who is retired LEO said that he thinks they have more than they are releasing. I sure hope so this bastard deserves a really ugly death and the damnation in the beyond.

OFC Jaspo Ellis, EOW. Rest easy brother, we will take it from here. Prayers to the family. I personnally like the custom in New York that when a cop shooter is taken into custody, the ENTIRE department waits in front of the station, and the "perp" has to walk by and feel the "Love" from the department as they are escorted in. Personnally, I wouldnt shed a tear, if the "perp" was killed while being taken into custody.

Oh this person whomever it is who committed this murder needs to die. What would be poetic though would be to just turn him over to this mans friends and family. I would not personally torture this piece of krap, I would not even allow myself to hate him. He does not deserve that much honor. I would however volunteer to scrape him off the face of this earthly existence like a dog turd off my boot. With a shovel or a hammer to the back of his head if that's what it took to let these scum know who's side we are on. But I would gladly hand him.over to this officers brothers and walk away with a clear conscience .I would have to pray for forgiveness later but that's doable.

Well the latest is that 4 more officers on the force have been threatened. I'm not sure if this is some sort of copy cat or they are getting close to this scum bag. If it were me I sure wouldn't be sending threats though.
If this is some sort of drug ring, which seems to make the most sense, and they are sending threats it needs to be stopped with extreme prejudice.

The facts will come out sooner or later. I've heard some talk here in Frankfort and nothing I will repeat here, but nobody has pointed any fingers that I know of. Somebody had to know his schedule, his car and must have had at least one accomplice. From what I understand, something was thrown into the roadway and he stopped got out to remove it and was shot. "Bubba Grudgeholder" didn't just do that on a whim...it was meticulously planned. They had to know exactly when to act. Definitely a professional hit and they wanted him absolutely dead. Most assassinations aren't with shotguns.

I agree.

Hopefully, the perp "gets lost while hunting in the forest" and is never seen again. I think everybody can figure that one out. Hanging after due process is too good for him.

Bardstown is a small town force and it wouldn't be hard to figure out his schedule. There are only 2 ways for him to get home. The spot was the perfect place for an ambush. The shotgun in this spot in the middle of the night was the perfect weapon. The longest shot there would have maybe been 25 yds. Actually more like 10yds were he was hit. There were tree branches thrown in the road (exit ramp).
