Word around Floyd County has it that a really BIG 'coon has been seen up here by the river. I got to thinkin', if that rascal shows up around here, I need to be ready for him. So, I worked up a load for my .458 Gibbs.

540 grains of water dropped & gas checked hard cast over a 105% density charge of 7383.

Come on up on my ridge, ya' ring tailed bandit. I got sump'm for ya', boy.

Jim if that don't do it you will just have to buy something nuclear.

You'd better take a second one in case you need to shoot him twice. Better safe than sorry Jim...Ray

He must be a big mean rascal. Here in middle Tennessee a 375 H and H seems to be enough for our coons. The 375 is also becoming the standard round for coyotes in these parts as well!;-)

You just don't want to skin him that thing will blast him to bits! Though south of you they have a use for it as they caught another 600 pound plus bear in Florida!http://www.foxnews.com/science/2013/05/28/wildlife-officials-capture-largest-black-bear-in-florida-history/

Have someone stand beside you with a crockpot...that way when the chunks start coming back down to earth someone can get em as they fall!

That load is in case they go under ground. I am sure there is a good 12 inches of dirt penetration there.

Well, if that don't work, there's always claymores or foogas...

I wonder who gets the worse of it? The man behind the buttstock, or the animal on the receiving end? It seems that the animal wouldn't experience any suffering...

Jim, One night we were coon huntin over on the pecos, and the coon nearly killed our best hound. old betsy nearly caught that old boar coon and when she got close a ring slipped off of that coons tail and went right over her muzzle. it nearly had the life choked out of her by the time I could get to her and cut that ring off.

Well damn, now I have to go back to the drawing board. I was thinking a 22 mag would be a good round compared to the 22lr I was using last trapping season and do the job well.

Gotta go get another gun I guess.....

For a moment there I thought Jim had talked one or machinist members into turning a boolit out of solid brass or something. Could be something to think about in case Griz Coon takes cover behind a Buick Duece and a Quarter or something.

I'm reminded of the story of the 19th century Englishman and the elephant gun. Englishman and elephant face each other. Englishman aims and fires. The elephant goes down, and the Englishman goes down. Whichever one gets up first is the winner.

Jim, are you off your meds again, or have you not shot out the courthouse windows lately and are feeling a little pent up?
I got a new bottle of tequila AND a bottle of good (if there is such a thing) Mescal if you need me to come up. It runs my weedeater real nice.

I've heard talk about big coons wandering up from the old Oak Ridge nuke disposal site. Hope you stop them before they spread!:shock:

Boy, that was 'touch & go' there for awhile!

That big booger showed up last night right around midnight. Dolly like t' went ape stink bonzoid when I turned on the deck lights.

I stepped outside with the Gibbs and it was on! I no sooner got the muzzle on him than he reached up and just swatted a 9 pound rifle outa' my hands like it was a broom handle.

For a nano second that seemed like an hour, we both realized I was (or so he thought!) unarmed. Good thing I had my snub nose S&W 500 in my ankle holster! He was comin' for my throat when I got off a shot between his eyes.

After the dust settled an' the smoke cleared, I got my 2 ton chain fall outa' the shed an' hoisted him up in a 36" diameter tree. You can see how big he was by comparin' him to the tree.

An, y'all thought I'd been drinkin' again. Maybe now, y'all will believe what I tell ya'.

MMM MMM MMM Sure does a Texican's heart good to know that there is good competition out there for bragging rights. Glad there's still people who can tell a story in the likes of Davy Crockett. Jim never fails to bring good entertainment to the table. But, ya just going to have to save that special load for the next monster that shows up in your neck of the woods. LOL

If you shoot up in a tree toward the west, let me know, and I'll look for coon parts in my yard. I'm about 45 minutes west of you. Or maybe with a rifle of that power, I'm too close to hope to find anything.

I shot it again today with 50 grains of IMR 7383 under it. The US Coast & Geodetic Survey called to tell me they got a seismograph reading in my area of 6.5 on the Rictor scale. Janet got all kinds o' mad at me, said glasses were fallin' outa' the cabinets in the kitchen.

.458 is not the caliber designation, it's the groove diameter. Gibbs is the rifle maker. Like saying .308 Mossberg, .243 Remington or .223 Savage. The caliber designation is .45-70, but Gibbs called it a .458, not to be confused with .458 Win Mag.

I once had a customer who I furnished 550gr. cast GC for his .458 win. He called it his skunk load, all one shot kills too, works

We have more of those big guys then the state thinks we do. They are protected here but if they keep multiplying in my area they just may become steaks before long.

Jim,

What are you plannin' on doin' with the hide from that critter? As big as he is he would make a dandy rug for in front of the fireplace, or even a comforter for the bed on those cold winter nights. It will cost you a few bucks to have him tanned but it will be well worth it to drive off the winter chill. Kinda like the Indians and their buffalo robes. There ought to be plenty of room for you and Janet to wrap up under with the size of that monster. Also if you get another that big, my friend Paul Bunyon would like one to make a hat out of. He has always wanted a coon skin hat but never found one big enough.

Best wishes,

Joe
