I was coloring some Felix lube last night. I had one batch in blue to match my eyes and the other one was black to match my mood. I always thought Pyrex was impervious to hot and cold and it may be. But when the lube cooled I suppose it expanded and look what happened. It got way out to my air compresser and all the way over to my work bench and glass and lube all over that part of the shop. I guess the bit of lead it got on will be pre-fluxed when I melt it. Those Pyrex measuring cups are 1/4" thick too. I only got three little cuts cleaning up the glass and scraping up all the lube I could with a paint scraper.

I can't quite tell what you had going there, but it looks like you had a Pyrex container with lube in it sitting on each burner. It does not appear that you were doing the 'double boiler' thing.

Perhaps you should try that...

Nicely done. Reminds me of why I'm not allowed to pan lube in the kitchen anymore.

Someone once told me to never apply direct heat to pyrex glassware. In the oven was ok, but to place it on a electric eye in direct contact with the heat element was not a good idea. I cannot remember who it was for the life of me (CRS), but I always used a double boiler or microwave dish.

Glad you are ok and also glad I don't have to clean it up:-D

To help you remember not to do that again, you need to send five ingots to every member here.

Glad it's just a mess and you didn't get hurt!

I learned the hard way in the lab that Pyrex has a definite (or more precisely, an indefinitely definite) service life on a hot plate. A few dozen heating cycles directly on a hot plate and that high-pitched "PINGK!!" tells you the beaker or other container has just filed for early retirement. I was lucky. Before everything collapsed along the break I was able to turn off the hot plate, position a dishpan, put on a glove and sweep the whole works off the plate into the pan with hardly a drop spilled. Sort of like a Maitre D pulling the tablecloth out from under all the place settings without disturbing anything.

I went to metal containers for anything I figured I'd be doing over and over again indefinitely after that. I doubt my lab technique is good enough any more to pull off another stunt like that again.

Now that you mention it...I think you're right. An oven is OK, even a gas flame, but those electric elements can get cherry red while the current is on.

Back when Pyrex coffee percolators were commonplace, I remember seeing those thin wire 'trivets' that you were supposed to place between the glass and an electric element.

Now that the heating element is lubed, flop some steaks on--- they won't stick!

What I really like is how your propane torch is so close and your fire extin. is so far.
Kind of reminds me not to smoke when I reload my boolits.:kidding:
Thanks for posting picks. I for one have reloaded while having one two many Beers:drinks: at the same time not a good idea. (Don't ask!)[smilie=1:

Now you know why I recommend a double boiler when using a Pyrex container!

You are on lucky feller (you may not think so, but you are)!

Glad you made it out alive...

When I worked in a hardware store we sold asbestos pads to go between glass pots and electric burners. That would get me jailed today... sorry 'bout the mess!

me seems to remember that there are two styles of pyrex measuring cups....handle loops down and re connects to container, and those with an open handle..only one connect.

seems there is a growth issue in heating pyrex and the early design would instigate a stress leading to a failure.....

so if its gonna get hot get the open handle..and double boiler......

VT,
Pappy usta say if you're gonna lie, lie big. I reckon if you're gonna make a mess, go for the gold!
We jes' raggin' ya', bud. Truth be told, I betcha every one of us has a story like that.

I wouldn't try to salvage any of that lube, might have tiny pieces of glass in it. Imagine what that might do to your guns bore.

I just let my wife read this thread and she quit laughing and her voice pitch went up when she read about the pot "Just what do you have out there?"

USARO4,

I was thinking about straining it thru cheese cloth but can envision another fine mess. I have plenty of Felix Lube made up so it will be a new couple of batches in METAL pans.:drinks:

Gotta go, the wife wants a tour of the shop.:-?

You may try heating it to liquid in a narrow deep container and letting it settle seveal times. It's probably more trouble than it's worth to try to save it. Gianni

I use the big Pyrex for my FWFL also, but I heat it in the microwave on 50% power until melted. I have not had any trouble with that so far. However, your experience makes me wonder if I'm tempting fate as well.

Keith, you are doing it the correct way: by applying heat from all directions, and not from just one. That allows the glass to expand in a more uniform fashion, and more slowly at that. ... felix

I am still dubious of micro waves when making lube. Sometimes they react in unpredictable ways.

My preference is to use a Pyrex cup (one quart size) in a double boiler set up (sauce pan with a rack in the bottom). If the Pyrex breaks (it shouldn't ) the pot will contain it. AND-D-D, you are positive that you won't overheat the lube and damage it.

Charlie

I usta think that way too until I had a microwave safe plastic bowl rupture in the process of melting some lube to fill the lubrisizer. Yeesh what a nice mess! :-? It flowed nicely until it filled the turntable dish and then proceeded to run under the turntable and goop up the mechanism there. :groner: My microwave popcorn still has the ambiance of BullShops NASA lube when I make a bag, but the flavor of it went away after the first bag or so...[smilie=1:

I use a double boiler and a hot plate now and leave the microwave to the Missus
