I bought a new Chaparral 45/75 long rifle more than a year ago and have been very disappointed with the lack of accuracy. I even installed a tang sight hoping it would make a difference. Nothing I tried worked. But about a month ago I picked up a brand new Ranch Dog TL460-300 that he designed for the Marlin 45-70. I sized the bullets to .4575, dipped them in liquid Alox, then loaded them over 28 gr of 5744. The results were fantastic. After firing one fouling shot, I put four bullets in under an inch at 70 yards, including three in a clover leaf. I was beginning to think the rifle was a lemon and was tempted to sell it, I'm glad I stuck it out and look forward to using it this fall. Here, little deer.....

Ain't it fun when it all starts to work together. Ranch Dog has solved a lot of problems over the years. A man blessed with some good ideas.

I wish he were still still selling his designs. Now, I just have to grab them when they show up here or on fleabay.

So if you sized to .4575 you have a .4555 groove?

What is the aproximate FPS on this load?

The bore slugged at .457, so I didn't expect .4575 to work well, but it did. I used a Lee push-through sizer, so I wanted to try the given size before polishing the die to a larger size. I'm not sure of the velocity as I usually wait until I've found an accurate load before running them through the chronograph.

The new Lyman manual lists a 300g jacketed over 28g of XMP-5744 at 1280fps s with cast a little over 1300 unless the 45-75 case wastes some of that over a 45-70.

I'd try the same boolit as cast and see how it shoots at 1500fps. But you cant argue with that load. Have you torture tested it with 50 or so rounds for leading to see if accuracy drops off?

Haven't torture tested it yet, but I lubed up 50+ bullets and will be loading them as soon as they dry. I don't expect leading to be an issue since this is a gas check bullet, but it would be nice to save money by not having to use checks at such a low velocity. I just took off the Lyman tang sight and installed a Marble's Bullseye sight to make the sights easier to see when hunting (Marble's # 006950). This is the first time I've used this sight and I am very impressed.

Greetings
Have shot 5477 in all my BP cartrige rifles to include a 45-60 , 45-70 and a 50-95. Does reasonable well. But the absolute best accuracy I get with them all is with 3F.
So when you get all done load up 10 with 3F and give it a wirl.
