would like to get some one's opinion on a good cast bullet for hunting with my recently acquired 500 smith?

Look thru these if you want to just buy the bullets.
I have one of the Mihec molds 560 grn hollow point that I am going to try and also looking at the 440 grn

I tink it kindo depends on what yur huntin ?
T-Rex ?
Wild Hog ?
Squirrel ?

Honestly, I think the Lee 501-440-RF has a nice large meplat for taking out a large Hog

...but probably only 'wing' a T-Rex [smilie=1::kidding::brokenima

Whatever is most accurate. You wouldn't believe what I found to be most accurate for my BFR in 460 S&W.

These two big bore S&W cartridges are something else. The most bizarre performance I have ever seen.

probably deer and hog, but may try bear next year if I find a place to go.

Pretty much any of them. I have the Lee and the RCBS, those two would certainly put the hurt on any game animal.

500 S&W lever gun...just thinking.

Why not... Made a 414 Supermag in a Marlin 336. I would think a Marlin with a proper barrel and bolt would be a dandy rig. A lever action "50-70 on steroids".
Any critter gets thumped with a caliber.50 slug at any velocity is going to feel the hurt. I shoot a 50-95 with a 350 grainer at 1450 fps using 3F and await the opportunity to pop something larger than a moon serenader. But ILLinois seems 10 years behind in everything.

Look up bighorn armory. Then watch the antelope hunting video. Then resist the urge to take out a lone lol!

I had a Miha make a mold a few years ago, 385gr HP and 400 as a FP, either one would take anything that walks in the USA. If your going for Trex step up to the 600 or 700gr in either HP or solid not much is going to survive hit with these.

700 grains might work

Not sure if its enough meplat.

Put a meplat on those RNs and go hunting. The freight train is gonna be slower than constipation, and break your wrist while yer at it.

444 with 1 in 20 twist maybe.

The Lee 440gr. is a nice, accurate boolit when pushed between 1100-1400fps.
I took a nice 300lb.+ spring bear with a heart/lung shot at 40 yds.
The critter thrashed around the bush for a bit, then tipped over and died. The boolit took out a piece of the heart, straifed the lungs, broke 2 ribs and exited the far side under the hide.
My boolit was straight wheel weight fluxed with Marvelux.[smilie=f:

Get yourself a bayonet and mount on it for those T-Rex critters. And always wear gloves because these things bruise the meat on both ends. Pass out hearing protection everywhere you go and say Huh to everyone you meet. After 6 shots with a ported 4 in barrel you might be able to file for a disability if you walk in with blood running from both ears. If they deny your claim accidentally let it go indoors once and once the mushroom cloud and the shock wave clear your application will be hand stamped APPROVED and underlined in red:kidding:

500 S&W lever gun...just thinking.

I like the way you think. 454 would be a bit easier but the .500 could be more fun.

I'd rather have the 50 Alaskan and shoot a real .510.

Please pardon my ignorance. Care to expand on that?

There are a couple articles from gun rags floating around about a 50 Alaskan lever action rifle. If I had my choice between a 500 S&W levergun and a 50 Alaskan, I'd take the Alaskan. I like the .510 cal more than the .500, and the extra case capacity couldn't hurt. Could hurt my shoulder, but might let me load the same as the S&W at lower pressure.

I love big guns, everyone knows. But for the 500 smith I have played with the 700gr and 440gr lee. And hands down I pick the 440. It's the onley lee mold I own and I have 2. It's a great shooting boolit, and out of my gun I get 1900-2000 fps with it. Here are some pictures of my 500 smith.

They are down the road from me and I saw that video. But to be honest a neck shot with a 44mag/45-70, etc. on a 75y 90lb pronghorn would be same.

They make some really nice gun however.

That antelope was hit in the head, that is why the head is turned away from the camera in the final part of the video. And that is what Intrepid told me.

I shot enough coyotes to know what happens in headshots. That 500 would have knocked off both horns and bugged his eyes at least.

[smilie=1:MIHEC`s 400g hp is a great one shot stopper for hogs. Haven't got to try out on deer yet, but its gonna get the acid test on opening day.
