I picked up a lee 356-111-1r mold this weekend at the local gun show - $12 DC mold. Sort of a weird weight - 111gr rn - bit I thought - what the heck.
So did some casting this afternoon (still very new to casting)
I did a mix of water quenching and just dropping them in a towel. To make things more efficient I brought out my 358-158swc as well that worked fairly well - I could usually do 3 rounds of casting then switch molds. All if the 358-158s looked great. I do have some problems with the 356-111. It seems that the air cooled boolits were fine. However, the water dropped ones became misaligned - it may be because I was moving the molds to the water.
Here are some pics:
These are the goodish air cooled.

These are the water dropped I decide to keep (not that great)

And my rejects:

The mold halves were out of line - must be something I am doing or may be the mold got crud in it. I use the bullplate lube.
I may also have had too much tin? I was using range scrap ingots with a piece of Lino in it an to that I added a few inches of 50/50 soldier. Thoughts?
You all have been great in helping me learn. I am still waiting on a bottom pour pot - still ladling with the lee spoon.

It looks like the mold wasn't closing properly. To keep this from happening I place the mold on my benchtop when closing. This gives it a "straight edge" to close on to help the alignment features line up properly for closing. Give it a try, I think it will help.
Good Luck,
Rick

Thanks - looks like I just was sloppy. Will try the setting it on the table next time.

Any thoughts on too much tin?

you probably didn't need the extra tin but it didn't hurt anything.
the misalignment is your real problem.
other than that things look fine.
