Hi I have enjoyed the knowlege that is shared here. I am new to reloading but not lead casting. I have made fishing lures for years.

Here is my question/problem. I recently purchased a Lyman 225415 mold from Amazon. The mold is brand new. My diameters are way oversized. They come out at 2.59" consistently. I didn't know I had a problem until I tried to seat a gas check to run it though a 224 resizer. The gas check will not fit. I tried to run one through the resizer without a gas check and it got stuck immediately. I punched it out and took out the calipers. Measured my castings and saw the 2.59" diameters. I searched the forums but I could not find anyone else having this problem. Any advice? Would a 225 resizer possibly work? I think even that would have a problem with this diameter. I don't want to buy one if it won't work.

Thanks in advance.

I assume you meant .259" & not 2.59". I would check to make sure the mold is closing properly. Are you getting "fins" on your castings? I'm new to casting boolits also. I'm sure those here with more experience will be along shortly to help you out.

Well if it's .259" someone has put the wrong mold in the box or stamped the mold wrong, you won't be happy with that mold as any sizing would wipe out the grooves unevenly.

Yes, I meant .259". It has to be the wrong stamp. It's the right bullet shape. There is no flash and the bullets cast perfectly. I contacted Lyman by email. I would expect to hear back from them next week. I am guessing they may have heard about this already. I can't believe I have the only one.

Possible candidate for paper patching in the .270?

Could you have gotten a 257420 mould by mistake? It looks like a scaled up 225415.

If you actually have a 257420 mould with 225415 markings, I would love to see a picture.

This would be the mould equivalent of that postage stamp with the airplane upside down.

I don't know if I am allowed to post links here but this was the only way to get both sides of the mold. I took some pics but the video shows it much better. Moderators I hope this is ok. It is directly related to this thread. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fc5-YgGZz4M&feature=youtu.be

Thanks for the replies. I did in fact get the 257420 with the stamp of the 22415. What a great way to start out. I also stuck my first 223 case because I forgot to change the shell holder. I had loaded a couple of hundred cast 38s previously. Tapped it out but broke the decapping pin trying to unscrew the case from the bolt. I'm not giving up. [smilie=1:

Thanks for the video!

I've been taking these Lyman-is-Junk threads with a grain of salt because I personally have seen only one really bad one, and that from the period in the 1950s-60's, where casting (for rifles at least) was kind of in the doldrums, the family was trying to unload the company and nobody was particularly motivated. But your specimen is a breathtaking piece of inattention to the job. Don't know whether you could get more for it from a collector on E-Bay or as ransom from Lyman to hide their mistake:mrgreen:.

Or, you could make lemonade by buying a .25-20.
