View Full Version : At the range, where are your rifles when you AREN'T using them ?

My friend Bryan and I shoot at a private range ( 50 - 200 yards ).

We discussed a few days ago a need for a " rifle cradle " that would hold 5 rifles in a safe and secure manner.

Today , I took some scrap wood and made one. We have plenty of room in the " Storage Shack " that is on site at the range to store this, keeping us from having to load and unload it every time we go to the range. So, this rifle rack will stay at the range in the locked range shed.

Tell me what you think ?

Looking good. Would that I had a range that open. Mine are in the back of my car, locked, when I'm not right there with them.

I understand the problem and like the setup, very good and easy to set up and take down.

Isn't it interesting that when I was a young shooter and needed all these things.......I didn't have the time or money to acquire them.

Now, I'm old and don't have very much more money than I did when I was young, but I've got lots more time......................

It makes me sick to see people lean a nice rifle up against a table or tree, or........ Then see it fall and damage a fine rifle NEEDLESSLY !

This rifle rack cost me the sum total of about $9.00. You can't get a rifle reblued, or a stock repaired for $9.00.

Ben, Please come and join my rifle range! I need guys like you who care about things. I was out shooting on the weekend and noticed someone has a new shotgun. I noticed because they stood in front of the berm and shot the target back boards and support poles to bits, like little tiny bits. It took a few boxes of shells but they finally reduced the .22/pistol backstop to rubble. I sure hate being associated with morons like that.

I guess you've noticed this also :

There is always a group of hard workers who tries to improve and build things up .

Once that is completed , there is always a group who comes behind them and tries to tear it all down.

That's a nice job. Im working on a converted light weight fridge trolley to wheel all my rifles from car to firing line.

Ben

Would probably be pretty easy to put an axle under this one and add a couple of wheels.

In the application I'll be using it for , the wheels just aren't needed.

Very nice rack Ben. I am blessed and very appreciative of having my own shooting range in my back yard and can shoot from inside or outside of my reloading building, albeit only 100 yards. There are three berms (25, 50 and 100) and the 25 gets the most use, mainly with handguns.

Thanks fellows for all those nice comments. All of you are very kind with your words.

I can't actually say it is " A Thing of Beauty ", but it is functional and plenty sturdy.

The rack should serve it's purpose well for our current needs.

I THINK THAT GUY SHOOTS AT MY CLUB TOO!!

Nice job on that rack Ben keep an eye on the rope. I think that's the "weak link" , maybe a piece from an old tie down strap? I seem to have lots of them, I lose the ratchet part for some reason.

Very nice easy and inexpensive design!!

I hear you guys about the idiots that destroy all the hard work at your clubs!! We have the same problem!! The thing that gets me is that they pretty much know who is doing it but have no "Real" hard core proof!! Some of the ranges at my club have video cameras but not all of them. Guess what ranges are getting the damage!! So you know its not an accident!! I'm sure they will get them in the end but for now they have gotten away with it!

I really like that! It inspires me to do something similar with my 100 yard range. Maybe not a reloading setup, but a small building with A/C would be awesome in TX during August and not very expensive to put together or maintain.

I built 2 double sided racks to put on our club range, under the roofs,we shoot from.
I was all proud of myself,as they would hold 16 rifles/shotguns,Untill someone tried to put a ruger 10-22 in it.and it fell all the way through. The distance from the bottom board,to the Barrel cutout board was ok for about everything ,except 10-22's,and M-1 carbines.
So I had to make new bottom boards,(as I had glued the originals in with gorilla glue)To reduce the distance between the top & bottom.I had just grabbed a 22 rife, and a shotgun in my shop,to use for measureing the height I needed.
My racks basically looked like yours, but instead of support legs,it has another rack on the back side.
Nice job ,on your rack !

Gotta ask though if there is any reason for the two different boards for the sides? Just using what was lying around?

I added some racks to this wagon along with mounted ammo box to carry items I may need, Also mounted a board on the rails with pistol case

It holds my ammo gear and even some cold drinks. The pic don't show the ammo box I have mounted to the rear to hold spent brass or the board on top rails those are items I added later.

Both racks model are excellent, my compliments to BEN and 4719dave.

Sirgknight, you are very fortunate to own your private range! I dream of that!!!

Here below our range, all guns must be on the table with bolt open when not used.

I also shoot at a club, but the parking allows us to back the pickups up to the shooting line, so I have a pickup bed with a dropped tailgate 3' from the bench. I just open the breech and lay the guns down in the back of the truck on the padded case they came to the range in.

They are locked in my Pickup or on the rack behind me. I belong to West End Gun Club (WEGC) which goes from 25 to 100 yards on pistol ; 50,75,100,200 on the rifle for the open non ownership members. They are in my truck or on racks at the 1,000,800,600,500,300,200,100 private members only range. Nice to be a owner member as I shoot 24 hours a day,7 days a week. The US Marines, and other services come out to lease our longer ranges for sniper training. They usually come during the worst sorts of weather, and I have never been bother by their days of range take over.We have a calender which tells us all when not come as then it is shut down for everybody. We have the only private land in the valley. The rest is US Forest on all sides. I understand the soldiers shoot from spots all over the surrounding mountains.
I like everyone's portable racks look nice with the finish. Great idea. We do the work ourselves on the range. We just added 50 rifle stations on the public area. Lot of welding, pouring concrete, trenching out for the steel mounts to hold the bottoms of the wooden target frames. On a general weekend the place is crawling with events for competition shooters.

Yup, lots of idiots in the world. Back in the yoop there was a little sand pit I shot pistols in. I humped some discarded cinder blocks and 2x4s in to stack and use as target hangers or to place shotgun hulls on and knock them off. Even left a few hulls on the cross stringers in hopes the dumb ones would catch on... Went back the next weekend and everything was shot to hell. No piece of block was bigger than a base ball...[smilie=b:

I just purchased a welding cart from Harbor Freight, $50 delivered, bright red. I will assemble it and outfit it for range time. Not my idea, saw it somewhere. but will keep me from making 2 or 3 trips from the parking lot to the firing line. I'll post some pics when done.

Here in New York, my club (East Aurora Fish & Game Club) uses a wood frame and homosote boards. The boards are replaced every year, due to perforations from high power rifle shoots. We paint a red border and ask that you do not shoot into the red, to preserve the frames. Oh yes! the top of the frame is a board angeled so you cannot put anything on it. We also have a locked gate that you have to code your pin into to gain access, so we know who is using the range when.
