I'm 3 months in waiting for my 44 silencer for my Ruger 96-44. I'm planning on running Miha's 300gr hollow point sub-sonic. The factory barrel will not stabilize this bullet so I need something with a faster twist rate. Problem is, I cannot find such a barrel.

Does anyone know who can/does manufacture a fast twist barrel for the 96-44?

Does anyone have a recommendation for twist rate for this application?

Thanks you

Shilen, Douglas, Kreiger, and Green Mountain (and I am sure others) all make 44 mag barrel blanks with a twist about twice as tight as the factory Ruger one. 1:16 is about normal I believe, or close to that. Certainly fast enough to stabilize the biggest boolit you would want to shoot from a 44 mag. As a bonus the aftermarket barrel blanks are usually .429" - .430" across the grooves so they will shoot normal boolits and not have to be loaded with oversize ones like most factory 44 mag rifles.

No, Ruger's standard now is 20 twist for the 44s. That SHOULD do a 350 grainer with no problem at 1100 fps. Look for another problem somewhere. My particular issue (first year) of that lever has a long throat. That magazine/clip has a very limiting factor for seating such a "long" boolit. My magazine won't permit a boolit more than 0.31 past the "crimp" groove. My barrel has 430 grooves and will feed and shoot custom (LBT type) 433 diameter 250 grainers within 2 inches at a hunnert at 1500 fps. ... felix

Find a friend with a late issue Marlin 444 and load it down to 1100 or so and see what happens. These Marlins have 20 twist also. Use YOUR boolit. Yes, a 16 twist will work for sure with a deep hollow point within a nominal 350 grainer. ... felix

Thanks for the replies. I'd really like to replace this barrel with a stainless barrel. The stainless holds up much better inside an integral silencer. I found one manufacture that makes 44 mag blanks. But that means I have to thread, time it, and set headspace. For the dollars involved it should come ready to screw on.

Does anyone know of a barrel manufacture that makes a fast twist barrel (stainless preferred) for the Ruger 96-44?

That's what gunsmiths are for.

Call www.BartleinBarrels.com and see if you could interest them in a complete turnaround job for s&g. They can make anything you can dream up. Naturally, they would need to have your gun and dummy ammo should you want a total lookalike. Prolly will be a year before they could start. If they say they would be interested, I would wait until they needed your stuff to start the work. They definitely would be my pick if you want the best with zero worries. ... felix

Well, I called Douglas barrels today. They had a chrome molly Blank in 11:1 twist in stock (not available in SS ). They did give me dealer pricing on my C&R so I ordered one. It should be here in about a week. Felix, thank you for the recommendation. I went ahead with Douglas due to it being in stock, and that is also what SRT Silencer recommend for their 96-44 integral builds.

I've never worked with a blank before. I've done finishing work on roughed in barrels, but never this much work. It'll be interesting. . . Say Gearnasher, you have any 44 Mag reamers?

Found my barrel blank on the porch this morning. Don't know how long it's been out there, could have been a couple of days. Just a bit of surface rust on the outside, can't see the inside too well.

I've never messed with a blank before. Looks like I can get two barrels out of this thing.

Hey Gearnasher, have any 44Mag reamers?

Very first thing with a new barrel blank, check to see which end has the SMALLEST internal diameter(s). That is the MUZZLE end! ... felix
