Hello All,

My first post here, have referenced these forums in the past but never joined. Now that I've got a 45 colt(a lipsey's flat top blackhawk). I think I will be spending more time here! Picked up some of the 270gr rcbs saa bullets from montana bullet works and some lyman 454190's from whyte leather works.

I have a question before I start loading the lyman 454190's. The bullets are a high lead content alloy, I imagine primarily for bp loads, but I am shooting smokeless. The load data for the 454190 lists bullet weight at 255gr, but these weigh in at 267gr. I was planning on 8gr of unique and a wlp primer for these bullets, and was wondering if that would need to be adjusted downward due to the heavier weight? Or is that good to go, because of the "medium frame" ruger's ability to handle a little more pressure (i know not the big frame pressures)?

I was hoping to keep all my loads in the original pressure range, as 900-1000 fps with the big 454 slugs seems like plenty for anything i need to do.

Thanks for any help that you can provide!

8 grs is fine.
8.5 might be even better.

I have recently been shooting the 454190 with 6gn trail boss. It chronoed right at 800 fps from a 7.5" Ruger. Very nicely accurate load.
BTW I am crimping over the olgive for a fairly short OAL.

8.0 grains of unique and you should be golden. I also like Herco at the 8.5 grain load mark and 6.0 grains of Red Dot. If the extra 12 grains bothers you (267 vs 255 grains) just drop the powder charge by 4% to be on the safe side.

.......... on the Herco. I use 9 grains in my Uberti "Evil Roy" SAA.

I have the RCBS mold for that bullet and they drop right at 270-271 grains and a .456 diameter. I'm sizing them down to .454 for a Marlin lever and .452 for a Ruger New Vaquero which is about the same strength as your gun. Using Unique with the Vaquero and running then through my chrony I get 889 fps with 8.0 grains, 900 fps with 8.2 grains, 936 fps with 8.5 grains, and 993 with 9.0 grains. 8.2 grains is what I settled on as most accurate. That same 8.2 load from the Marlin runs 1095 fps. Due to the short cylinder of the Vaquero I'm crimping at 1.66 which is at the very top of the crimp groove. Anything longer than that and they would bind the cylinder so a heavy crimp is called for.

I don't mean to hi jack your thread, but, how long did it take to get your order from Montana Bullets Works? I send an order on 4/3 and sent 2 emails 2 weeks later to see if they got my money order, and still no response.

As I remember, the turn around was a few weeks from when they received my check. I had ordered them some time ago, so I can't be sure. It seems the made to order bullets take a bit longer but they are a very nice product.

We , (the Bullshop) have the 454190 mold and many other to choose from. Our turn arround time is fast. We can generally ship an order within three days of receiving payment.
Folks here seem to forget we are still available to provide this service. That is understandable since we no longer advertise the service.

And don't be afraid to lube those 454190's with SPG or such and seat them lightly onto about 35g of 2f Swiss BP. Oh, the way is was is the way its meant t' be!

I might also mention that we will lube with a black powder lube (NASA) or a smokless powder lube (Lotak) and can size to your specified diameter, within reason. We can/will also target a specified hardness or custom alloy.

Those Lipsey's Flatops are great sixguns, but they do have unifom .452 cylinder throats. .454 bullet won't be unsafe, but accuracy will be better with .452.

Glad to know Bullshop is still in the bullet business. He will get some business from me.
