Has anyone tried the 357 max with the 200 gr rcbs mold? I was looking at it at n.o.e website and it seems that it might be a good match in my contender http://noebulletmolds.com/NV/images/1111-118-RCBS35200FN.jpg

I used the 358-200 GC SIL boolit from CBE in my Dan Wesson revolver. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8516/8472306868_a3aa3259d6.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/11260137@N07/8472306868/)

Actually weighed about 215gn gas checked and lubed, but worked well enough in the DW. Load was 19.5 gns ADI2205, aka IMR/H4227.

I did shoot one silhouette match using that load in the Contender; felt recoil was a bit more than in the heavier DW.

I now use the same boollit in my FA .357 mag.

Thanks, Norbrat. I found some praise for the rcbs 200 in the max using the search feature and decided to order the mold from noe.

I started using the RCBS 200 grain flat nose in a .357 Max. Handi-Rifle this past weekend.

I have JUST begun to work up a load, started at 16 grains and got to 17.5 grains of IMR4227 and had five shots in an inch at 50 yards with that last charge level. This was with Hornady GCs, sized at .358". I have not chronographed anything yet. I have not played with seating depth at all - crimped into the crimp groove and gave it a whirl.

My rest was pretty shakey and the trigger is horrid, so I assume it would have been tighter but I was just checking to make sure it was worth pursuing the load further and only put five down-range. If it will do 1" at 100, I will be pleased and I think it may just do it. Once I have a solid 100 yard load, I will play at 200.

Norbrat,
I appreciated your post as well - looking for any and all information I can find on the Max with cast. Good to see someone else at it.

I shot many 40's with this boolit in my FA 357. I only went to the RCBS 180 Silhouette boolits for the better nose profile but yes, the RCBS 35 200 is a fine shooting boolit in a revolver.

The only better match might be me and a rib steak.

Tom,

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to find out:

Who is John Galt
Where is John Galt

Should you succeed, you will be much better equipped to deal with the future.

As usual, this message will self destruct in 60 seconds.

( Or maybe not. )

I think he may be on a ship with Antonio.

I just finished my first shoot with my 357 max Contender carbine and the Lyman 173 gr Keith plain base boolit (I forget the number but got a good gun show deal on the mold). I have been shooting the Lee 158 gr SWC-GC boolit and the Lee 150 RN for quite a while. The 173 plain base shoots just fine at 1400 fps with Alox but lead fouling begins to appear at about 1500 fps but still isn't too bad at 1600 fps. Didn't try for accuracy but that will come later. The 158 GC boolit is very accurate at 100 yds at an MV of about 1850 fps. The 150 gr RNpb is at an MV of 1150 for a fun shooting plinker accurate out to 70 yards. Both plain base loads are with Unique and the 158 gr gc is with 2400.

I have used the RCBS 200gr GC bullet for both my TC contender and my DW. Excellent bullet. Mine cast from WW come out at about 210gr. Had good results with AA1680 in the TC and H4227 in the DW.

That's the one that lit my .357 Max fire.
Been absorbing any other information I can find for some time now.

I read Glenn's article and found it pretty informative. I bought a max bbl to hunt with a friend in Iowa. After some testing with the remington 180 gr hollowpoint, it gave me some nice cloverleaf groups at 100 yds. Since that worked well, I thought about the in-availability of components and figured this would be a great cartridge for cast. I'm hoping for as good of results with cast as jacketed.
I haven't cast for a couple of years, but am finally able to relax a bit and get back into the swing of things.
Hopefully this will be a great hammer for white tails.

If you can get your hands on one, the Ranch Dog 359-190gr is a great boolit for the Max. I downed a nice buck with that boolit a few years back. Fueled by a moderate+ load of AA1680, gas checked and tumble lubed with mule snot. I use 45/45/10 now, but neither one leads a lick in my 14" Contender barrel. I just wish the throat wasn't so long. The free-bore imitates a revolver. Still shoots nice, but not to the level it's capable. Good luck with the Max.....you will like it.

I have always thought the .357 Max was a real sleeper for short range BPCR. Compress load of 3Fg Swiss under a 200gr boolit.
