Is this boolit ,(C358-158 Lee mold), set up for gas checks? This pic is from the very very first run I did, long since sent to CB heaven.

So, would gas checks help accuracy in these, how expensive are they, and how are they applied? Thanks for any responses.

Yes. Those bullets are designed to use a gas check. Basically, you pay around 30 bucks for 1000. Then, you secure them to the bullet during the sizing process. I have a love hate relationship with gas checks: I hate the extra time and expense, but I love the flawless function. You can, however, shoot those bullets without one. And some guys on this forum have even reamed out the mold so as to create a driving band instead of a gas check shank. Good luck. Looks like a well designed SWC

That mould is comparable to the Lyman 357156, and an good performer. The biggest difference is that it only has one crimp groove.

Gas checks seem to be kinda expensive. I think I'll stick with these as is, a good plinking boolit. Thanks for the replies!

I'm thinking of doing just that and having one of the machinists take the check shank off. Will this affect fill-out??

if done neatly it should have no affect on the castability of the bullet.

I had it done to a 480 grain B/P mold it came out fine. We took off the sprue plate and pulled out the pin that stops the sprue plate swing. Locked it up in the milling machine table and used an end mill. Took 10 Min. He charged me Ten bucks.
I was happy. 50 Cal. checks are very costly.

In a lee mold the letter C in the prefix means it is cut for gas checks. Gianni

...............They make a similar PB slug. Sometimes those designed for a GC and shot without don't fare as well. Usually if they do it's at a reduced velocity. Since you have the mould, try'em and see.

Graf & Son lists 35 cal GC's at:
