Last summer, a friend and his wife ask a favor of me, and I helped them out. No big thing, to me, just what any of us would do for friends. Anyway, he had gotten interested in knife making about a year ago and started "dabbling". He said he wanted to make me a knife for helping them. I told him he didn't have to, but he was insistent and I couldn't turn down his offer, or didn't have a good reason to. Anyway, we picked out the blade shape, length, material and looked at scales for the handle. I wanted the scales to accentuate the Damascus blade. He worked on it and we went over it a few times. He kept me up to date on progress, and even changed the wood type for the handle. Below are pictures of my new "Pretty". 10 inch overall, 5 inch blade, burl redwood scales for handle. I love the way the burl and Damascus just blend together. I asked him not to put a belt loop on the sheath, as I carry my knives in a backpack. He said he was going to, anyway, so the next person can carry it on a belt. Its 2 stainless studs that you can slide between belt and pants--carry right or left. Didn't he do a great job matching the sheath texture to the scales? Can't wait to use it next hunting season.

That burl DOES accentuate the damascus nicely. Beautiful knife. It looks like it feels good too.

I really like the straight simplicity of the blade. I hate the way some knives are being made with all the curves, notches and saw teeth. Hey, a knife is supposed to cut things not saw them. If you need a saw, carry one. Again, a beautiful knife.

Your friend created a very fine keep sake for you. It is one of the better looking knives I have seen. It is not only beautiful, but very well balanced looking as well. I know you will cherish it for many years to come.

Very nice, a work of art. Seems it will work as well as it looks. Reckon I could wash this guy's car or mow his lawn or something?

Thanks guys for all the compliments. My friend will enjoy them. It's like Lathesmith's and SwedeNelson's work--art or quality piece of machining? He calls the handle shape his manatee handle. It fits in your hand like your hand in a fine glove. It's just a natural feel. Balanced. Afraid to use it? I may have to go hog hunting so I can use this thing before next October or so. I don't own things I can't or won't use. You will never buy a "never been fired" pistol, rifle or shotgun from my house. I'm sure there are people who own commemoratives, I don't.

That is some fair to middlin' "dabbling." :drinks:

I'd love to have the skill and patience to dabble half as well.

He has a variety of knives completed, and currently working on more. PM me and I can put you in touch if interested. Everything he does beautifully, knife work or leather work. He is very meticulous, careful and dang near a perfectionist when it comes to his work, as opposed to me. (Glue it, staple it, get the duct tape, who cares what it looks like, make it work! Anybody got a bigger hammer?)

Curious if he made the blade or bought the blank. A couple of years ago I took a class to make pattern welded steel. That's a lot of work, beautiful piece.

He bought the blank from a supplier. Not sure which one, it's Alabama Damascus. Should hold an edge great. Time will tell.

Very nice.
A stud on the side of a sheath is called
a "frog", carryover from when men wore
a sash instead of a belt.
